slide4. What is it? Language for Thinking is a structured approach to developing verbal reasoning, thinking and language skills. It aims to develop children’s language from the ‘here and now’ to the ‘how and why’.

For children who find it difficult to understand these complex questions and ‘read between the lines’ they struggle. This difficulty with questions may an impact on their understanding of social situations as well as reading comprehension.
slide5. How to use it The child is presented with a picture and is read a brief story that goes with the picture.
The adult then asks the questions verbally.
At this stage the child needs to be integrating what s/he see’s and hears, so the focus is on developing oral language skills.

The resource can be used flexibly with whole classes as the basis of a literacy lesson. With small groups or individual children it can be used as an oracy or literacy task.
slide6. Teacher’s Role Assess the child's level using language for thinking assessment
Support the child to answer questions when struggling by scaffolding (thinking aloud, pointing, breaking down tasks)
Provide additional information to support (images/ videos if needed)
slide7. Expectation from the Pupil To use pictures/ paragraph and information given to answer questions
To ask for help if they don't understand
