Colonies of Halophilic ArchaeaThe image shows red colonies of a Halomicrobium sp. cultured from rock salt.  Colonies are approximately 1 mm in size.  The agar medium contains greater than 20% salts; the crystals in the image are salts that have crystallized out of the medium. (A) Golden brown thermophilic cyanobacterial mat, morphology was mucoid/slimy, seen in the run off water pool surrounding one of the geyser cones (B) in Upper Geyser Basin. The geyser water run off can be seen in (B) as brown streaks of cyanobacterial growth down the side of the geyser cone. slide4. Yellowstone caldera, Wyoming Yellowstone caldera, Wyoming.  Bacterial mats, golden brown in color, seen on the outer edges of two different chromatic Beauty Pool’s in Upper Geyser Basin. The blue water in the center of each pool is the hottest water at ~199 °F cooling to ambient the farther from the center. Cyanobacteria grow around 163 °F or lower.
