Easy Read This is an Easy Read version of our Future Leaders Information Pack Supported by

We use the term ‘Disabled Person’ to describe anyone who identifies and experiences disabling barriers. This is based on the Social Model of Disability. We also include people who may not use these terms but still face disability discrimination explained in the Equalities Act 2010. You can read more about the Social Model of Disability by clicking here. Definitions 3 Musician: We use the word ‘Musician’ to describe anyone who creates music. This includes all the different ways of making music and all the different genres. Young Person: For this programme, we define a ‘Young Person’ as anyone between the age of 18-25 years.

We are excited to open applications for our new Future Leaders programme. Future Leaders is a Drake Music programme to support and promote inclusive, accessible practice in music-making. It aims to improve representation of young Disabled People in the workforce by: Introduction to the Role 4 Building skills and knowledge for the future Offering practical learning

Looking at other roles in the music industry such as leaders, managers, facilitators, and educators We are seeking 4 Disabled musicians for our Future Leaders programme. This programme is designed to support musicians who want a long-term music career. Music needs to be more inclusive and exciting for everyone. We welcome applications from people from underrepresented backgrounds and communities, the global majority, women, and LGBTQIA+. 5 Our programme welcomes everyone.

£500 project budget (if receiving benefits or allowances is a barrier to participating, let us know so that we can work out how best to support you). Working Hours:

For work experience the location may be hybrid, which is a mixture of online and in-person. 8 Location:

About the Programme 10 Future Leaders gain music education skills through training, mentorship, and real-world experience. You will also get the chance to lead your own project. We will tailor the Future Leader programme to your interests and needs. The following page has an example of the programme outline:

Training (35% of time, around 5 days): Introduction to the programme Designing your Future Leader journey Developing expertise in music education 11

Work Experience (35% of time, around 5 days): Learning about inclusive music teaching Hands on learning Co-leading and leading activities in a music education setting 13

Mentorship (10% of time, around 1½ days): Setting goals and your ambitions Guidance around practice Exploring challenges Emotional wellbeing and support 15

Project (20% of time, around 2½ days): Leading a project guided by you This will be discussed with your mentor throughout the programme This will be led by your interests and wishes Some examples of what the project could be are on the next page 16

Running a one-off inclusive music session in your community Creating a shareable inclusive music resource Recording a piece of music or video Collaborating with other artists 17 A project could be:

What We Are Looking For Essential criteria are the qualifications, experience, skills or knowledge you must have to apply for a role. We are looking for someone who meets as many of the essential criteria as possible. You must have these skills. We have marked essential criteria with an (E). The criteria are on the following pages. 18

We are committed to doing our best to remove barriers to access for our staff, participants and anyone applying for a role at Drake Music. During the application process:

We provide application materials in a range of formats and allow people to apply in different ways. If you need to apply in a different way, please let us know. On our expression of interest form, we will provide you with an opportunity to tell us about any access requirements. This will be for a get-to-know-you meeting. We also ask all shortlisted candidates about their access requirements when we offer a get-to-know-you meeting. Access 24

When you first join Drake Music a member of the team will ensure an Access Audit has been carried out. We can also support you with your Access to Work application if needed. 25 We view access as an ongoing conversation. We understand that access needs can change over time. We have different ways to regularly check in and see if any changes are needed to access provision.

In written format. This is approximately 500 words. You can then send the files to us by sending a link to an online folder. For example, using Google Docs or a file transfer service like WeTransfer. How to Apply 26 Creating videos or audio recordings to answer the application questions. This should be approximately 5 minutes.

The get-to-know-you meeting is an informal meeting for you to: Get to know us 29 We appreciate that a lot of time and effort goes into submitting an Expression of Interest. Once you have submitted your Expression of Interest we will reply as soon as we can to let you know that we have received it.

We use new technologies and ideas to open access to music for all. We are a national organisation working across England. We deliver our programmes and projects from centres in Manchester, London, Bristol and beyond. In the 1980s the Drake Research Project was set up by Adèle Drake. About Drake Music 31

Since Drake Music was established as a charity in 1993, we have provided: More than 100,000 music-making opportunities, for over 1,000 Disabled People. We use technology in a creative way to remove disabling barriers across three programme areas: Learning, Participation and Training

We deliver workshops in schools, train teachers, and advocate for inclusive practice. 32

We also work with music hubs and educators to develop the music sector. Arts and Collaborations

We support Disabled musicians to develop their creative practice and careers via commissions, masterclasses, and performance opportunities. We also offer Disabled musicians a range of creative music making opportunities to participate in. Research and Development

We work with communities of Disabled musicians, makers, and technologists, to imagine, design and build new accessible instruments and ways of making music. 33

We are a home for new ways of thinking about music, musical instruments and technology, performance, teaching and practice. 34 Three principles inform our thinking and our practice: Our work is underpinned by the Social Model of Disability. Disabled musicians are at the heart of what we do. We are always learning, and sharing what we learn.
