Intro to Job Paths: Industry, Government, & Academia SWIGS Meeting 9/4/19 Planning a Career and Job Search: Finding your Sweet Spot Values Don’t like job Not good at job Unemployed Advancement & Security- large company with many higher ranks/ been around longer Balance/Altruism- Companies with more progressive mission statements Challenge/Discovery- Startup with a lot of open ground to explore Goal orientation/Autonomy- Maybe self-employment (idea to license, manufacture product, contracting R&D services, consulting firm) Activity 1: Assessing your values Think about what role you may be better suited to play as well ( research, management, project leader, etc.) Planning a Career and Job Search: Finding your Sweet Spot Activity 2: Assessing your Personal Strengths Intrapersonal Skills - taking initiative, attention to detail, flexibility Interpersonal Skills - communication, teaching and training, counseling and advising, leading and providing direction Problem Solving Skills - research, analysis, creating and innovating Operating Skills - managing (finances, people, processes), planning and organizing, administering Think about what you do especially well? What do you enjoy doing? What do others ask you to do? What does your mom brag about?
