slide2. #KidsDeserveStGeorges The paediatric cancer principal treatment centre (PTC) for the South Thames region is currently based at St George’s and the Royal Marsden.
The majority of outpatient appointments, diagnostics and chemotherapy are delivered at the Marsden. The majority of the surgery, expertise from regional children’s specialists and all of the intensive care for the very sickest children is delivered at St George’s.
NHS England is reviewing options for the future of the PTC, which will in future be located either entirely at St George’s, or moved to the Evelina.
We believe that keeping the services at St George’s is the best result for children and their families.
NHSE launched a 12-week public consultation on Tuesday 26 September and will review feedback before making a decision into the future location of services. Background<br>

Families want their kids to continue their cancer care at St George’s – not just because of the outstanding care, but because of the location – removing the stress of central London travel and parking
Fantastic medical facilities and innovative care – including St George's offering ground-breaking new immunotherapy cancer treatment that modifies a patient’s own cells to help fight cancer – creates trust

slide6. #KidsDeserveStGeorges What St George’s staff are saying “Children’s cancer services have been embedded at St George’s Hospital for the past 25 years. During this time the expertise to support these children has developed alongside the developments in cancer care. All of the specialist services at St George’s are integrally involved and have developed pathways of care.
Relocating children’s cancer services would mean all this expertise and collaboration would need to be rebuilt and reinvented. This would have an immediate impact on children with cancer undergoing treatment. It would also adversely impact the stability and provision of specialist services (PICU, surgery, respiratory etc) for all other, non-cancer children under the care and support at St George’s from south west London, Surrey and further afield.
The functional relationships between clinicians at St George’s and the Royal Marsden have developed over decades. slide7. #KidsDeserveStGeorges What patient families are saying Emma van Klaveren Finlay said daughter Floriana received “fantastic” care at St George’s and the Royal Marsden and is now in remission.
Emma says Floriana needed to attend St George’s at least weekly during her care, and travelling to central London would have increased their already high levels of stress.
“Caring for someone with cancer is a 24/7 job and the slightest thing means you have to leg it to the hospital – a raised temperature could mean sepsis.
“You can’t easily drive to central London and you can’t take an immuno-compromised child on the tube, so it would have really added to the stress and expense. I will be completely devastated if this change goes ahead.” Emma van Klaveren Finlay and Floriana with dad James and sister Ishbel<br>

Nine in 10 young cancer patients and their families (93%) used a car to make all or at least part of their journeys to and from hospitals and treatment centres, calling it the “only viable way” to make the required journeys. Research undertaken by Young Lives vs Cancer www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Running-on-Empty-Report.pdf Parents of children with cancer are unequivocal:
They don’t and won’t use public transport with
a poorly, vulnerable child.
That’s why St George’s has built this into plans for the brand-new Children’s Centre with the availability to drive up to the front door and park in dedicated car parking spaces, therefore eliminating the risk of infection to vulnerable kids from public transport. It will boast family accommodation too. St George’s<br>
