Russia held the first BRIC Summit in 2009. South Africa was invited to join in 2010 and attended its first Summit in Sanya, China, in 2011, forming BRICS. The Chair of BRICS rotates annually in line with the acronym. South Africa chaired BRICS in 2013, 2018 and now in 2023 2 OVERVIEW OF BRICS South Africa developed its theme and priorities through an inclusive consultation process with government, business, academia and civil society. South Africa chairs BRICS in 2023 under the theme: BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism. BRICS is the leading partnership of the global South and provides leadership towards global growth, sustainable development and inclusion of the South. 3 THEME OF SOUTH AFRICA'S CHAIRSHIP Developing a partnership towards an equitable Just Transition: Climate change forces us to make significant transformational changes to our economies, particularly in the energy sector. The solution for one problem should not worsen the lives of those dependent on the energy sector. Transforming education and skills development for the future: We must unlock opportunities for education and continuous skills development as they are the long-term solutions towards sustainable development and escaping poverty. 4 SOUTH AFRICA HAS FIVE PRIORITIES FOR 2023: Unlocking opportunities through the African Continental Free Trade Area: Strengthen the partnership between BRICS and Africa for mutually beneficial opportunities towards increased trade, investment and infrastructure development under the AfCFTA. Strengthening Post-Pandemic Socio-Economic Recovery and the Attainment of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development: We must act on our so that our economies drive global economic recovery. We must use BRICS mechanisms to address global challenges and accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda. 5 SOUTH AFRICA'S PRIORITIES FOR 2023 continue: Strengthening Multilateralism, including Working Toward Real Reform of Global Governance Institutions and Strengthening the Meaningful Participation of Women in Peace Processes: We need achievable global governance reforms that BRICS can deliver on through its influence. We must address the marginalisation of women in peace processes. BRICS Calendar of Events 2023 Around
