01 Why hydrogen Hydrogen as the early warning of a developing transformer fault, and what makes the H2scan approach different. 3
04
THE EARLY WARNING From fault to action A fault develops A developing fault inside the transformer begins to generate gas. Hydrogen appears Hydrogen generation is a leading indicator of an impending failure. The monitor alerts GRIDSCAN monitors continuously and alerts the owner when the asset enters an abnormal state. The team acts Maintenance steps in while the problem is still manageable, before a premature or catastrophic failure. 4
05
WHAT SETS H2SCAN APART Set-and-forget monitoring 10 years Warranty on the hydrogen sensing element of the GRIDSCAN, with 3 years on the product < 2% Cross-sensitivity to other gases such as CO, CO₂ and hydrocarbons Zero Calibration gases, consumables or scheduled sensor maintenance, thanks to patented self-calibration Hours To install and start getting value, not weeks or months. Solid state, with no moving parts
15
THE BASICS Measuring in gas or oil 15 Two places to monitor In a sealed tank design, the sensor can sit in the gas space or in the oil space. One reporting scale Gas-space readings are reported as in-oil equivalent. The ratio between the two is roughly 20:1. Vacuum is not a concern The sensor is not affected by transformer vacuum levels.
16
THE BASICS Locations and angles 16 Typical installation locations: in gas at the top, in oil on tank and radiator valves Recommended install angles MOUNTING RULE Do not install with the sensor pointing down. This avoids gas accumulation at the sensor.
04 Field examples What customers have seen after installing GRIDSCAN monitors on their transformers. 19
20
MEDIUM-VOLTAGE FEEDER EVENT Through-fault detection 20 A small rise, caught On March 5, 2024, hydrogen rose from 0 ppm at 04:50 to 2 ppm by 06:40, then returned to 0 ppm at 3:10 p.m. A real cause A review of the medium-voltage circuit found a broken conductor that had caused a ground fault on the feeder. No truck roll Hydrogen returned to normal, so no further action was required.
21
RENEWABLES Solar farm transformers Solar farm 1: steady, high gassing Six inverter transformers. Three showed high gassing of 6,000 to 9,000 ppm. A GRIDSCAN 5000 was installed in the nitrogen blanket of a 1.4 MVA, 10-year-old unit.
Before: frequent DGA oil samples, and degassing whenever a unit reached 8,000 ppm.
Now: hydrogen is checked daily. Levels are steady, so no truck roll. Solar farm 2: after a fluid change Nineteen inverter transformers. Mineral oil was replaced with FR3 to reduce high gassing. A GRIDSCAN 5000 was installed in the FR3 liquid of a 4-year-old unit.
Result: hydrogen fell to about 50 ppm but was not eliminated, possibly because of harmonics.
Now: daily monitoring with periodic manual DGA sampling. Not at alarming levels, so no truck roll. 21
24 MVA TRANSFORMER, 12 YEARS OLD Removed before failure 22 APRIL 19, 2024 Transformer energized after a gassing investigation found no issues. MAY 8, 02:21 Fault detected as hydrogen production rose rapidly, creating the need for a manual DGA. MAY 20 Lab sample measured 80 ppm hydrogen and 52 ppm acetylene. OUTCOME Acetylene indicated the transformer should be removed from service for internal inspection.
23
UTILITY PROOF OF CONCEPT From pilot to fleet standard 9 Substations in the pilot, chosen as a representative sample of transformer ages and vendors 7–45 Years in service across the pilot units with known ages, rated from 9.375 to 30 MVA 10 yr Plan to retrofit every distribution transformer. GRIDSCAN 5000 is now required on all new units 23
24
IN THE FIELD Installation examples In oil, on SCADA the same day A GRIDSCAN 5000 mounted on a tank valve and connected to SCADA on installation day. With the GSAO-2 control hub A GRIDSCAN 6000 in oil, paired with the hub for local display and alarms. In an underground vault An in-gas installation on a vault transformer. 24
