Rotary Legacy in Motion:From Hippo Roller to ECOroller November 2025
02
The Spark In 2015, the RC Gibsons asked a simple question:
“What if we could make collecting water easier for women and girls?”
That question became a movement — Help Us Roll 1000 Hippos.
03
The Hippo Roller Project (2015–2019) 51 Rotary cclubs joined the campaign.
Over 500 hippo rollers funded and delivered.
Partnerships formed across Canada, the U.S., and South Africa.
Result: Thousands of families gained easier access to clean water.
04
A Model Rotary Project The hippo roller initiative became a Rotary benchmark:
Collaborative, transparent, and high-impact.
Connected multiple districts and clubs worldwide.
Strengthened Rotary’s reputation for practical, life-changing solutions
05
COVID Changed Everything The pandemic brought hunger and hardship to rural Africa.
Our project pivoted — transforming a water project into a food security program:
The 1000 Survival Gardens Project
06
What the Project Achieved (2020–2024) 145 Rotary Clubs in 27 Districts.
1,121 water rollers & survival garden kits delivered.
9,000+ lives impacted.
28 communities strengthened.
From water to food — Rotary clubs delivered resilience.
07
Expanding Our Vision(2025-2030) The next evolution:
Scaling the Eco Water Roller
Improved design. Reduced volume, more manageable (70 liters).
More affordable. Lower cost means more units in more hands.
Highly scalable. Localized manufacturing in South Africa.
08
The ECOroller ECOrollers are manufactured by Eco Tanks South Africa, one of the country’s largest suppliers of water tanks and WASH products, with a countrywide distribution network.
Rotary Club Price - US$75/unit
(compared to US$110 for a hippo roller)
09
The Model:Fund One, Roll Two A simple, powerful formula:
Fund One ECOroller
Deliver Two!
Each donation* doubles the impact, reaching twice as many people.
Club donations are match – roller for roller -- by the Rolling Water Foundation, a Canadian registered charity. *Tax receipts provided
10
The Vision for Scale Goal: Deliver 20,000+ ECOrollers over five years.
Each delivery means:
Hours saved daily for women and girls
Improved health and hygiene
Time for education, work, and family
Water for household gardens
Every roller changes multiple lives.
11
Rotary’s Unique Strength for club collaboration Global network of trusted clubs.
Transparent project governance.
Club to club engagement across continents
Local partnerships already in place.
A proven collaborative project — now we multiply the impact.
Bigger reach. Bigger impact. Bigger change.
12
The Ask: How many do you want to scale? Commit to the project.
Determine the number of ECOroller you want to scale @ US$75.00/unit
Double that number to include the matching rollers. For example:
10 Rollers = US$750
10 Rollers matched
20 ECOrollers delivered
