Thomas Vo Coursework Compliance What does coursework compliance mean? It affects the way Financial Aid is awarded. Financial Aid will pay for classes within the program but not for any pre-requisites, or other courses, not specifically listed as part of a program of study. This federally mandated instruction is designed to help students: Graduate as early as possible Maximize their financial aid eligibility Ensure they will be eligible for federal student aid for 4-year and transfer programs Reduce student debt and payment obligations Federal Regulations A person must be enrolled as a degree seeking student in an eligible program to receive FSA funds. A degree seeking student is someone who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible institution for the purpose of obtaining a degree or certificate offered by the school. If the student is merely allowed to take some courses before being officially admitted to the program, he/she is not considered a regular student and is not eligible until he/she is officially admitted. Effect on Federal Student Aid If a student is enrolled in courses that do not count toward his/her degree, certificate, or other recognized credential, they cannot be used to determine enrollment status unless they are eligible remedial courses. This means you cannot award the student aid for classes that do not count toward his/her degree, certificate, or other recognized credential. Exceptions: Remedial Coursework Remedial coursework prepares a student for study at the postsecondary level (as opposed to preparatory coursework, which prepares a student for a given program.) If the student is admitted into an eligible program and takes remedial coursework within that program, he/she can be considered a regular student, even if he/she is taking all remedial courses before taking any regular courses. You may count up to one academic year’s worth of these courses in his/her enrollment status for federal aid. (30 semester hours). Department of Education considers EAP courses as remedial and as such, up to 30 credit hours are eligible for federal student aid, provided student is entered in degree program.
