Slide2

So far, we have learned how to use the subjunctive with expressions of will and influence. Now, we will learn how to use the subjunctive with verbs and expressions of emotion.

Los padres de Harrison

esperan que sus hijos aprendan el subjuntivo.

When the verb of the

main clause of a sentence

expresses an emotion or feeling such as:

hope

fearjoypityor surprise

then the subjunctive is required in the

subordinate clause

of the sentence.

conservado.

Espero que

el gobierno resuelva el problema de calentamiento global.

Slide5

Just like with verbs of will and influence, use the infinitive, not the subjunctive when there is no change of subject.

Temo

llegar

tarde.

I am afraid I’ll arrive late

. VS.

Temo que mi novio

llegue tarde. I am afraid my boyfriend will arrive late.

The expression

ojalá

(que)

means I hope or I wish. It is always followed by the subjunctive. Note that the

que

is optional with this expression.

Ojalá que se conserven

nuestros recursos naturales.

I hope that our natural resources will be conserved

.

Now pay close attention: The

indicative

is used in a subordinate clause when there is no doubt or uncertainty in the main clause. Check out this list of expressions of

certainty

.

No negamos que el subjuntivo es

complicado. We do not deny that the subjunctive is complicated.

Es obvio que Sra. Thomas y Sra. Galuszka son fanáticas de Beyoncé. It’s obvious that Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Galuszka are Beyoncé fans.

Slide13

The verb

creer

: In affirmative sentences the verb

creer

expresses certainty or belief

, so it is followed by the indicative. Creo

que debemos reciclar.

I believe that we should recycle. The verb creer: In negative sentences, when doubt is implied, creer is followed by the subjunctive.

No creo

que

haya

soluciones para todos los problemas del mundo.

I do not believe that there are solutions for all of the world’s problems

.

The expressions

quizás

and

tal

vez

are normally followed by the subjunctive because they imply doubt about something.

Quizás haga

sol mañana.

Perhaps it will be sunny tomorrow.

Tal vez veamos

la luna esta noche.

Maybe we will see the moon tonight.
