Slide2

What is JoCo 2020?

Slide3

Relationships

All Johnston County Public Schools will invest in bridging the gap between the whole child and the larger community by engaging all stakeholders in the learning process.

How can we build relationships with our students?

Slide4

Relationships

Picture a student who feels a strong personal connection to her teacher, talks with her teacher frequently, and receives more constructive guidance and praise rather than just criticism from her teacher. The student is likely to trust her teacher more, show more engagement in learning, behave better in class and achieve at higher levels academically. Positive teacher-student relationships draw students into the process of learning and promote their desire to learn (assuming that the content material of the class is engaging, age-appropriate and well matched to the student's skills).

-American Psychological Association

Slide5

Relationships

How did Inky’s relationship with his mother change Inky’s life?

Inky believes that process is more important than the product, do you agree?

Slide6

Relationships

Kim Bearden, Co-founder of the Ron Clark Academy

Kim’s question for us as teachers who want to build relationships with our students:

Would you pick you? If you could walk down the halls and peer into classrooms, would you as a student choose you as a teacher?

Slide7

Relationships

Todd Nelsoney, Co-author of Kids Deserve It!

Todd wrote letters to each of his incoming fifth graders. He told them how much he believed in them before he even met them! This was like a

prequel

to the relationship he would build with each student.

“Kids want to know they matter to you.”

Slide8

Relationships

How will you foster relationships this year?

What will your students go home and share about their first day of school?

How will you build a relationship with “that” student?

Slide9

Innovation

All Johnston County Public Schools will embrace an evolving perspective for meeting the needs of all students through the practices of invention and iteration.

How can we grow an innovative mindset this year?

Achievement

Significance

Slide13

Innovation

Innovation in the classroom requires us to color outside the lines…

Innovation can be changing just one thing, not everything.

Slide14

Innovation

Dave Burgess, Author of Teach Like a Pirate

“We want makers, not memorizers~creators, not consumers.”

“Can you sell tickets to your lesson?”

Slide15

Innovation

Joy Kirr, Author of Shift This

You don’t have to dive in all at once to make huge, positive changes.

Slide16

Innovation

Questions to ponder:

Structured morning work or free choice?

Homework or no homework?

Worksheets or pathways/playlists?

Take a few minutes to brainstorm and share more innovative ideas with your grade level.

Slide17

Relevance

All Johnston County Public Schools will create shared learning environments that are safe, encouraging, and provide opportunities for reflection and personalize learning experiences for all staff and students.

How can we offer meaningful learning experiences?

Slide18

Relevance: What do our kids deserve?

Slide19

Relevance

Slide20

Relevance

What does the jar represent in the context of our school?

Why did the fleas stay within the confines of the jar?

How can we apply this to our goals for this year?

Slide21

Relevance

Slide22

Relevance: What is your why?

Simon Sinek, Author of Start with Why

“Very few companies or people can clearly articulate WHY they do WHAT they do.

WHY as in your purpose, cause, or belief. WHY are you here today?

Many people can lead, but we want to inspire.

Slide23

Relevance: Which quote speaks most to you?

It is time to think about your WHY for this year...
