Building your own employability In today’s world, you can’t rely on anything or anyone to make you successful – we have to be accountable for our own career and create your own pathThe world of work is changing we need to have an entrepreneurial outlook to create opportunities Research suggests that by the end of the decade 40% of employees in the US will be freelancers – working primarily for themselves and re-invent yourselves to meet the constantly-changing demands of the workplace. It won't be easy - it's a flat-out and worldwide race - and they won't be waiting for you or anyone else. In addition, you can forget about lifetime employment working for any one business or company. In fact, many of you (as well as over 40% of the country by the end of the decade) will be working as freelancers - basically for yourselves - so get ready. 4

5Career management skills are vital! Traditional 20th century graduate corporate career escalator Entry level job at the bottom of the escalator Groomed to gain first promotions and move up the escalator Progress up the escalator to management and executive positions Age 55 – 65 step off the escalator and make room for new graduates at the bottom of the ladder Source ‘The Start Up of You’ Reid Hoffman & Ben Casnocha

6 Death of the traditional career pathThe escalator is now jammed at every level Hard for young to get onHard for mid career to ascend Hard for over 60s to get off Labour market has permanently changed

Future world of workGlobalisation is changing economies everywhereCompanies will search for talent in new places – global labour marketTechnology is impacting every aspect of the workforce Industries are undergoing considerable change and re-positioning – successful organisations will need to continually change and adjust

8 A hidden job market has been emerged in recent years: the jobs we create for ourselvesWith the rise in graduate unemployment, more and more graduates are reassessing their career options and looking for more entrepreneurial career paths For graduates looking to get into business straight out of the gate, getting involved in your own creative start-up could be the best way to beat the job market Swinburne has a great entrepreneurial tradition

Swinburne’s international student ‘Entrepreneurial Success Stories’By Ruben Ramdhony

About me I came to Melbourne as an International Student in July 2005. I successfully completed a Diploma of IT at Holmesglen and a Bachelor of Business Information Systems at Swinburne University. I graduated in Dec 2008. I then applied for a Graduate Visa subclass 485 and started looking for work and found it very hard to obtain full time roles, so I complemented IT part time work with casual work doing various jobs e.g. cleaning and night shift security guard. I am currently working as a Test Analyst for a major University in Melbourne and successfully applied for Permanent Residency.

Finding Full Time work Almost all recruiters told me that without Permanent Residency it was almost impossible to find permanent full time work. I found that the Not-For-Profits weren’t that picky and that they were offering good salaries and benefits. I found work as Help desk & support, Server/Network Administrator, Business Analyst and a Project Manager.

Starting a small businessEarly on after graduating, I started as a sole trader with an ABN doing small jobs for customers; I had a business card with my name/contact and a price list for services such as repairing computers, removing viruses etc. In 2013, a former employer called me to ask if I knew of a good IT guru to look after their IT services. It was like ‘Opportunity’ called me, I decided to contract out the IT services with a friend. It was the birth of LANT3K IT Solutions; we registered as a partnership and we had our first client. Today we have 5 clients and counting …

Pros and Cons of going solo.Pros Be your own boss, and make all the decisions crucial to your own success. You could make much more money that working for someone else.Work directly with your customers, and see what they need first-hand Work in a field or area that you really enjoy, or that compels you to excel Cons You’ll likely have to work long hours Your income may not be steady; there may be times when very little is coming in at all .

The road to successUnderstand that your attitudes towards life in general is either make or break. YOU are ultimately responsible for your success Remember that the game is won or lost in the mind before it is won or lost through external circumstances.

Resumes and InterviewsYour resume is only one of the ways a recruiter or potential employer will hear about you. Remember that there is a hidden market and it is hugeTailor and target your resumes. Have it written or checked by a professional in the field.Call the employer or recruiter after sending a resume, introduce yourself in person.Look the part, dress up for interviews

Networking and VolunteeringNever stop networking; use social media, LinkedIn, meet and greet, religious gatherings and whatever means that gets you out there. Someone out there needs your skills! You just have to meet them.Volunteer and learn new skills on the job, university prepares us for the theory but volunteering/work provides us with the means to put the theory in practice.Volunteering shows employers your potential and it’s your foot in the door

Graduate opportunitiesThere ARE organisations who provide graduate opportunities to International students. Do your research, ask and don’t take rejections personally. Keep moving forward and keep lookingUniversities provide professional year programs

GET PAID WHAT YOU’RE WORTH (THERE’S NO LIMIT!) IT’S WHAT YOU BECOME (YOU GROW THROUGH STRUGGLE) DO WHAT YOU WANT (BUT DO I WORK FOR MY CUSTOMERS?) THE GOOD 6 of 26

GET PAID WHAT YOU’RE WORTH (THE FLIP SIDE: IF YOU GET PAID AT ALL ) IT’S HARD (NO, I MEAN HARD ) “THE BUCK STOPS HERE!” (FEW PEOPLE WILL EVER GET TO EXPERIENCE WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE) THE… LESS GOOD 7 of 26

“I WISH PEOPLE HAD TOLD ME …” 8 of 26

START WITH A CUSTOMER! (UNLIKE ME) GET ANOTHER JOB (IF YOU NEED TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF) IT TAKES TIME! (I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT IN 3 MONTHS…) 1. GET A CUSTOMER 9 of 26

COPY! (BUT DO IT BETTER) LOOK FOR AN EDGE (FOR US, IT WAS A NEW PRODUCT) WHAT WILL YOU BE KNOWN FOR? (PICK ONE THING, EVEN IF YOU DO MANY) 2. WHAT WILL YOU DO? 10 of 26

YOU’RE SELLING TRUST! (THE CUSTOMER IS INVESTING IN YOU ) “THEY” SAY: GET YOUR EVELATOR PITCH RIGHT (I SAY: “GOOD LUCK!” & DON’T LET THAT HOLD YOU UP) “THEY” SAY: “WHAT’S YOUR DIFFERENTIATOR?” (I SAY: “GOOD LUCK !” & DON’T LET THAT HOLD YOU UP EITHER ) 3. WHAT ARE YOU REALLY SELLING? 11 of 26

LEARN FROM OTHERS (YOU MAY NEED TO GIVE YOURSELF AWAY FREE !!!) IT’S BEEN DONE BEFORE (SO YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING) SPEAK YOUR CUSTOMER’S LANGUAGE! (YOU’RE THE “BRIDGE”) 4. GET SOME EXPERIENCE 12 of 26

READ (HOW HAVE OTHERS DONE IT?) READ (GET THERE FASTER BY LEARNING FROM YOUR PEERS, AND PEOPLE LIKE RICHARD BRANSON, ANTHONY ROBBINS, LES BROWN, MARK McCORMACK , ZIG ZIGLAR, JIM ROHN…) READ (REFER TO POINTS ABOVE. AS IN “KEEP READING”) 5. READ 13 of 26

HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO GET STARTED? GROW ORGANICALLY GET ANOTHER JOB IF YOU NEED TO (IT TAKES THE PRESSURE OFF AND LETS YOU KEEP YOUR DREAM ALIVE.) 6. DO I NEED MONEY? 14 of 26

EVEN YOUR COMPETITORS WILL HELP! IT’S AMAZING HOW PEOPLE WILL HELP YOU (AS LONG AS YOU DO THE WORK!) “CAN I PICK YOUR BRAIN?” (YOU CAN, BUT AGAIN , YOU DO THE WORK) 7. ASK FOR HELP 15 of 26

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL MAKE PROFITABLE DEALS (DON’T UNDERVALUE YOURSELF OR YOUR PRODUCT/SERVICE) (JUST SO YOU DON’T FORGET, I’M KEEPING THIS STATEMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE REST OF THE DECK!) 8. “IT’S ABOUT MAKING MONEY!” “Business is about making money!” 16 of 26

KEEP GOING! (BUT KNOW WHEN TO STOP) (SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BUY FROM YOU. SET LIMITS AND KNOW WHEN TO MOVE ON) “IF YOU’RE NOT LIVING ON THE EDGE, YOU’RE TAKING UP TOO MUCH SPACE!” 9. MOTIVATION “Business is about making money!” 17 of 26

I.T. IS LIKE AN ICEBERG (MOST OF THE REAL WORK IS BELOW THE WATERLINE) MONITOR CUSTOMER FEEDBACK (CUSTOMERS TYPICALLY JUDGE ONLY WHAT THEY SEE (EVEN IF WHAT THEY DON’T SEE IS AMAZING )) “THE LITTLE THINGS ARE BIG, AND THE BIG THINGS ARE LITTLE” – Mick Saddler 10. “PERCEPTION IS REALITY” “Business is about making money!” 18 of 26

DRESS APPROPRIATELY (BE A CHAMELEON) WALK BEFORE YOU RUN (BUT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE RUNNING) GET AN OFFICE (NOTICE THAT THIS ISN’T TOP OF THE LIST. START VIRTUAL?) 11. LOOK THE PART “Business is about making money!” 19 of 26

WATCH WHAT YOU SIGN (SOMEONE ONCE SAID: “THE BIG PRINT GIVETH AND THE SMALL PRINT TAKETH AWAY”) “WHAT’S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN?” (IF THE ANSWER IS POSSIBLE EXTINCTION, THEN PERHAPS A LAWYER’S INPUT IS A GOOD IDEA) BALANCE OPTIMISM AND REALISM (WHAT IF IT ALL GOES WRONG? HAVE A FALLBACK POSITION) 12. BE (A BIT) CAREFUL “Business is about making money!” 20 of 26

LEARN TO PRESENT (NO “UM”S AND “AH”S…) BE SURE TO LISTEN (YOU’RE NEVER THERE TO GET THROUGH A SLIDE DECK!) OBJECTIONS ARE GOLD (“DO YOU MIND IF I ASK WHY YOU FEEL THAT WAY?”) 13. YOU’RE IN SALES! “Business is about making money!” 21 of 26

IT HURTS WHEN YOU HAVE TO EAT YOUR WORDS (“NOT RIGHT NOW…”, “AT THIS STAGE…”, “I DON’T BELIEVE…”, ANYTHING BUT “ NEVER ”) SAY “YES” (HOWEVER…) (BUT NEVER DO A 50/50 PARTNERSHIP) (SEE HOW HARD IT IS??) 14. NEVER SAY “NEVER”… “Business is about making money!” 22 of 26

PEOPLE! (YOUR STAFF, YOUR CUSTOMERS…) 15. “WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART?” “Business is about making money!” 23 of 26
