Slide2

The old PPG

Three hour long meetings

Rarely a GP in attendance

Communication bottleneck

Overly detailed minutes

Antagonistic at times

Trying to do their own thing separately from the practice

Slide3

Information Bottleneck

Slide4

Winter Illness evening

Beware the virus!

Slide5

If they won’t come to us…

It was a dark and stormy night in November

No one but the PPG committee came to the Winter Illness evening

We had good information that would be of value to the patients

Could we go to the patients?

Slide6

What is social media?

Blogs and micro blogs (

Wordpress

and Twitter)

Social networking sites (Facebook and

Linkedin

)

Content communities (

Youtube

, Flickr)

Collaborative communities (Wikipedia)

Internet forums, email, discussion groups (

myPPG

, Yahoo Groups, Google Hangouts)

Slide7

What is a blog

Short for weblog - a

regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style

.

Started out like a diary authored by an individual on a single subject.

Developed over the years to include multi-authored blogs more like websites.

Not just a young people’s thing, used by top academics, medics, NHS managers

Slide8

If they won’t come to us we will take the information to them

Slide9

Advantages

No longer reliant on practice website

Upload information any time and quickly

Can include links to other websites, documents

Fulfills educational as well a communication remit

Reaches a wide audience

Slide10

Disadvantages

Need to keep it up to

date

Need someone who knows what to do or is willing to learn

Need to make sure that it is correct and evidence based

Slide11

But how will people find it?

Advertise on the notice board in the waiting room.

Use Twitter.

Work with the library computer buddies.

Set up a

vPPG

which includes all patients and encourage them to let the practice contact them on behalf of the PPG committee.

PPG corner – leaflets, The Waiting Room Files

Something for everyone!

Slide14

Six month review

Supported the practice’s events – Winter Illness evening, first aid session.

Improved the waiting room – PPG corner, reorganizing leaflets, notice board

Improved communication with patients – blog, twitter,

vPPG

,

myPPG

, The Waiting Room Files

Collaborated with the wider community – library, the Lions, NCT, LLL, local hospice

Supporting social prescribing

Slide15

The old PPG

Three hour long meetings

Rarely a GP in attendance

Communication bottleneck

Overly detailed minutes

Antagonistic at times

Trying to do their own thing separately from the practice

Slide16

The New PPG

One hour meetings

GP at every meeting as well as the PM

Wider communication with all patients, not just a select few

Reports distributed before meetings and minutes record decisions only, not verbatim

Supportive of the practice and the partners

Working together as part of the wider team
