Professor and Co-Director Claude . For at least two millennia before the advent of the Spaniards in 1519, there was a flourishing civilization in central Mexico. During that long span of time a cultural evolution took place which saw a high development of the arts and literature, the formulation of complex religious doctrines, systems of education, and diverse political and social organization.The rich documentation concerning these people, commonly called Aztecs, includes, in addition to a few codices written before the Conquest, thousands of folios in the Nahuatl or Aztec language written by natives after the Conquest. Adapting the Latin alphabet, which they had been taught by the missionary friars, to their native tongue, they recorded poems, chronicles, and traditions.The fundamental concepts of ancient Mexico presented and examined in this book have been taken from more than ninety original Aztec documents. Book Two gives comprehensive accounts of the religious ceremonies and days of feasting during the time of the Aztecs, including prayers, songs, and the duties and roles of Aztecs inside the temples during the ceremonies. This book also details the various tributes and sacrifices given to specific gods. Early detection, or screening, is a common strategy for controlling chronic disease, but little information has been available to help determine which screening procedures are worthwhile, and how often, or to whom, they should be applied. This book presents the epidemiological methods that can be used to answer such questions. The book focuses on the description and measurement of changes in the natural history of disease brought about by early detection and treatment. Valid methods for assessing the usefulness of screening in reducing morbidity and mortality are emphasized and both experimental and nonexperimental studies are fully described. In addition, this work discusses the use of mathematical models in setting screening policy ways to enhance the feasibility of screening programs and the clinical course of screen-detected disease, separating the effects of early treatment, lead time, and length bias on outcome. The second edition has been updated throughout and considerably expanded. There are three new chapters: Cancer of the Breast Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease and Cancer of the Cervix. These give concrete demonstrations of the applications of screening methods to important diseases. Incest, polygamy, murder, sacrilege, impalement, castration, female power, and despotism are some of the images used by Athenian tragedians to define the non-Greek, barbarian world. This book explains for the first time the reasons behind their singular fascination with barbarians. Edith Hall sets the Greek plays against the historical background of the Panhellenic wars, and the establishment of an Athenian empire based on democracy and slavery. Analyzed within the context of contemporary anthropology and political philosophy, Hall reveals how the poets conceptualized the barbarian as the negative embodiment of Athenian civic ideals. She compares the treatment of foreigners in Homer and in tragedy, showing that the new dimension which the idea of the barbarian had brought to the tragic theater radically affected the poets\' interpretation of myth and their evocation of the distant past, as well as enriching their reportoire of aural and visual effects. History is recorded in many ways. According to author James Deetz, the past can be seen most fully by studying the small things so often forgotten. Objects such as doorways, gravestones, musical instruments, and even shards of pottery fill in the cracks between large historical events and depict the intricacies of daily life.
