WHY DO WE STUDY HISTORYWhat does this coin tell us?Whose image do you see on the coin? In which year was it coined? To which country does the coinHistory answers all our questions like

THREE DIVISIONS OF HISTORYPROTO HISTORYThis period is the period between pre history and history for which we have a few written records. Our knowledge is based on archaeological findings HISTORYThis refers to the the time period after writing was invented. We can trace the history of any event from the written recordsPRE HISTORYIt is the time when writing had not been invented and there are no records of this period. Our knowledge is dependent on bones, coins , tools etc

Slide5

DATES IN HISTORYThe years are counted from the date to the birth of Jesus Christ. All dates before the birth of Christ are counted backwards and usually have the letters BC (Before Christ) added on. A.D. stands for Anno Domini, which is Latin for “year of our Lord,” and it means the number of years since the birth of Jesus Christ. That was a little more than 2000 years ago, so the date 500 A.D. means 500 years after 2000 years ago

SOURCES OF HISTORYArchaeological sources include pottery, tools, buildings, paintings, coins etc.All these things tell the story of the past , but remain buried in the ground for thousands of yearsLiterary sources include the books or what was written years ago. WHO IS AN ARCHAELOGIST?An archaeologist is a person who studies the remains of buildings made of stone and brick, paintings and sculpture. They also explore and excavate to find tools, weapons, pots, pans, ornaments and coins. They also look for bones of animals, birds, and fish to find out what people ate in the past.Historians use the word source to refer to the information found from manuscripts, inscriptions and archaeology. So historians and archaeologists are like detectives, who use all these sources like clues to find out about our pasts.
