Clues in the CensusThe
1840 US Census
asked for the names and ages of Revolutionary War pensioners. The
1890 US Census included a schedule of Civil War veterans and widows. The records of Kentucky (partial) through Wyoming and the District of Columbia survived. The
1910 US Census asked whether the person was a survivor of the Union or Confederate army or navy. (UA=Union Army; CA=Confederate Army; UN=Union Navy; CN=Confederate Navy)
The 1930 US Census asked whether a veteran of the US military or naval forces mobilized for any war or expedition, and specified what conflict
Some state censuses also include military information. Slide10

Index vs. RecordSometimes, you will find Indexes
, not Records
An index will tell you what is in the collection and give you the volume/page number of the record you are looking for.It will not allow you to see any of the actual records. However, you can follow up on Ancestry’s Source Information to obtain the actual record.
For every Index, Ancestry.com will include the following information:About the Index
Source Information (including where to purchase copies of originals)Related Data CollectionsSlide16
Indexes vs. Actual RecordsWhen you look at an Index,
Ancestry.com
will give you:A detailed description about what’s included (or excluded) from the group of records
Where in the collection you can find the records that interest you Slide17

Creating a TimelineAmerican Civil War Regiment collectionSearch for the regiment or use keywords
Example: “11
th Cavalry Regiment, Kansas”Gives day-by-day account of conflicts/locations from October 31, 1862 through July 26, 1865.
Lists a history of the regiment and describes the actions and missions of the regiment.“It had now been in service nine months, had lost over 300 men, and was reduced below the minimum standard of an infantry regiment. Soon after its arrival at Kansas City the regiment was mounted, changed from infantry to cavalry, and given authority to recruit two new companies. It was not until the following spring that the old companies were recruited to the cavalry maximum and the new companies, L and M, fully recruited. During this time the regiment was occupied in the arduous and thankless border service at scattered points by detachments and often engaged with the enemy's bushwhackers…

Detachments of 11th and 16th Kansas, 11th Ohio and 2nd California Cavalry. While this command was in pursuit of a band of outlaw Indians
it was attacked by a large number of red men. The soldiers were at their breakfast at Dead Man's fork when the alarm was given and had no time to saddle and mount.
The attack was repulsed with little difficulty, but the horses
in the meantime had become frightened and broken away in the direction of the Indians, who surrounded about 100 of them and drove them into the mountains. The casualties in the fight were 2 soldiers wounded and 4 Indians killed.Slide33
