American Expeditionary Force
The America’s armed forces were sent over to Europe to fight World War I.
These “
doughboys” were led by General Pershing.General Pershing was the reason why there was an American Expeditionary Force, when he saw that there were simply not enough men to fight. They were called doughboys because they had white adobe dust on their boots.Slide3
Selective Service Act
Drafting all the men they needed for war.
Many men entered because they thought it was the war to end all wars.
At first it was only young men, but as the need for men grew greater, more men were accepted.Slide4
Training
It was supposed to be several months for training the soldiers, however often this didn’t happen and men were shipped out directly to war.
To get the men over to Europe, America used the
convoy system. Because of the threat of German u-boats passenger ships were surrounded by military boats, destroyers and torpedo boats.Slide5
Segregated Units
The Harlem
Hellfighters
, an African American military unit, earned the highest military award in France, Croix de Guerre.Americans were unhappy that African Americans were receiving awards so they instead put them in positions such as cooking and cleaning.
