What worked… …and what didn’t???

1 st Samuel 8:1-3 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. 2  The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah , and they served at Beersheba.  3  But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice .”

“And this be our motto: In God is our trust.”

1 st Samuel 8:4-5 4   So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.  5  They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

1 st Samuel 8:6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the  Lord .

1 st Samuel 8:7 And the  Lord  told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king .”

1 st Samuel 8:7-9 “…it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.  8  As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.  9  Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights .”

Federal What do we expect government to do for us? State Local

1 st Samuel 8:10, 11 Samuel told all the words of the  Lord  to the people who were asking him for a king.  11  He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

1.) We are all susceptible to delusions of political hopefulness . We can get more from our government while giving less. We just need to change politicians. Government won’t abuse power the more we give them.

2.) Disappointment with government should drive us to the truthfulness of God.

3 .) We must treat government as God calls us to—with prayer. “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  2  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  3  This is good, and pleases God our Savior,  4  who wants all people to be saved  and to come to a knowledge of the truth .” ( 1 st Timothy 2:1-4 )

1 Timothy 2:1-4 “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,  i ntercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  2  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness   and holiness . 3  This is good, and pleases  God our Savior,  4  who wants all people to be saved  and to come to a knowledge of the truth .”

4.) Disappointment with human government should revive our desire for God’s rule over our lives. 5.) We should be different from others around us by the way we trust God, not government, for what we need.
