6. Student Example: FulgulriteI am ethnically from Algeria; the largest country in Africa. Being in North Africa, the Sahara desert constitutes 4/5 of the country. The desert is the perfect place for fulgurite to form. "Fulgur" is of Latin roots meaning "lightning". For when lightning strikes sand, rock, or other materials it forms this stunning mineral. Thus, the Sahara provides an ideal location to form an abundance of fulgurite. I selected this mineral over the many other for its symbolic potential. For often times in life, the hardest, deadliest blows can reestablish the existence of beautiful concepts.
7. Student Example:A culturally significant mineral is calcium. Half of my family is from Germany, and there the water has higher levels of calcium in it. Specifically, carbonated mineral water is often drunk with meals, and it has a distinct taste. Student Response: Vast majority liked the assignment--thought the assignment had value and should be used again in future semestersPersonalized approach made learning about minerals more meaningful.Uplifting assignment--Students experienced great pride in their cultural heritage. Majority would share their personally significant mineral with classmates.
