On each finger, write one of the following: Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia (the thumb – as it was the most important). At the tip of each finger, write and then draw the following crops: Cotton (Maryland), Indigo (North Carolina), Tobacco (South Carolina), Rice (Georgia). Inside Georgia’s finger, write “prisoners/buffer from Spanish colony” since it was initially a colony of prisoners and acted as a buffer from Fort St. Augustine

65. New England Colonies The New England colonies consisted of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. These colonies were dominated by religious groups like the Puritans. Life in New England was dominated by the church, and there were severe consequences for those who failed to attend or those who spoke out against the Puritan ways. Families immigrated to the area and 90% of them lived in or near small villages along fast flowing rivers. Since New England farms were fairly small, homes were pretty close together. This closeness encouraged business and made community schools practical. New England was the first region in which public education appeared. The first university in the colonies was created, Harvard. Town meetings were held in the common building. These provided an opportunity for townsmen to voice their interests and concerns.Important People:Roger Williams & Ann Hutchinson(Rhode Island):Originally from Massachusetts. They were banished from Massachusetts because their beliefs differed from the Puritans. They founded Rhode Island, which was the first colony to allow people to practice different religious beliefs.Thomas Hooker: founded the colony of Connecticut. Hooker influenced the writing of The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, which was the first written Constitution in America. He also allowed for more religious people to vote.

66. Life in the Middle Colonies The middle colonies consisted of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Religion in the middle colonies varied, as no single religion seemed to dominate the entire region. Religious tolerance attracted immigrants from a wide range of countries. Quakers, Catholics, Jews, and Lutherans were among those religious groups that had significant numbers in the middle colonies. The middle colonies is often called a “melting pot” with the many diverse religious and ethnic groups living there. The two largest cities in the colonies were located in the Middle Colonies, New York and Philadelphia. The Middle Colonies welcomed these people and became the most cosmopolitan colonies.Important People:William Penn: He was a Quaker. Quakers were another group from England who were persecuted for their beliefs. Penn established Pennsylvania, which means “Penn’s woods.” Colonists worshipped freely and were tolerant of others beliefs. Native Americans were treated fairly and they were the first colony to outlaw slavery.

67. Life in the Southern Colonies The Southern colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. Most people in the Southern colonies were Anglican, except for Maryland. Lord Baltimore founded Maryland as a safe haven for Catholics. Religion did not have a major impact on the Southern colonies because people lived on plantations that were distant and spread out from each other. Georgia was the last colony founded and it was a home for debtors. Charleston, South Carolina was the most important city in the south. It had a large sea port and was the center of the slave trade. Important People:James Oglethorpe: He established Georgia as a home for debtors.

Magna Carta (1215)Rebellious barons forced King John to sign a new Charter of Liberties, which later became known as the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter.” This charter addressed the relationship between the king and the barons, clergy, and merchants. The king promised not to increase money payments to the Crown without consent and to respect property rights. The charter confirmed certain traditional rights. Three principles contained in the Magna Carta were important:Rule of law:  Government based on the king’s whims was outlawed.Basic rights: The king promised to respect the liberties and customs of the land.
