Jalen Rose 1315680

Slide2

What are Kaiju and what is this genre?

The word Kaiju is a name given to all giant movie monsters, such as Godzilla, King Kong and

Gamera.

T

ypical

Kaiju movie will usually consist of the creature rising from its habitat to stumble across or be disturbed by human life and begin destroying everything in its

path

There

have been acceptations to this such as Godzilla being

Japans

saviour in multiple

instances

Kaiju genre of movie was incredibly popular in its country of origin- Japan

.

The largest of production studios to create these movies was Toho, Toho up to this date have released 66 feature Kaiju movies

Godzilla

Tohos

largest successor and one of the most memorable characters of all time.

been portrayed through the use of a large body

suit The popularity of Kaiju movies had been at an all-time high after the release of the original Godzilla the movie only cost a measly £600,000, yet in the box office made over £1.3 Million. Toho went on to make 33 Godzilla moviesWas silly but lovable

Godzilla 1998

F

irst

Godzilla movie to filmed and produced entirely by an American

studio

would

be creating a CGI version of Godzilla to stomp around the streets of New York instead of Japan. The design of this Godzilla was universally hated. The aforementioned design looked nothing like Toho’s Godzilla, Godzilla actors Haruo Nakajima and Kenpachiro Satsuma, as well as Shusuke Kaneko (A director of future Godzilla movies) were very critical of the film and it’s ‘Godzilla’. Nakajima had said "its face looks like an iguana and its body and limbs look like a frog". CGI and VFX didn’t seem to go hand in hand with Kaiju at this point in time.

The Host (2006)

The Host’

(

Boo Joon-Ho

2006

) [Not to be confused with the 2013 movie] it was released in South Korea on July 27

th 2006The movie was about a large amphibious creature that had been mutated by the pollution in the Han River, this creature became hostile and begins hunting humans for food. The Host’s creature design was completely visual effects and CGI The success of this movie shows that CGI and VFX are capable of creating a Kaiju movie that is loved by audiences and critics alike

Slide6

Cloverfield

Plot follows a group of New York citizens, surviving the rampage of a Skyscraper sized alien monster as it crashes through the city, the footage used is from one of the characters handheld cameras

Cloverfield

’ was another success in the world of Kaiju, reviews across multiple media platforms all came out

good

CGI and VFX mixed with this live action footage created a new and refreshing experience for the time, nothing had been done like this before, it has also brought forward the Kaiju genre. Kaiju have started to become more believable and audiences had begun to immerse themselves in the worlds even more.

Slide7

Pacific Rim

Pacific

Rim

jumped at the chance to create new Kaiju just as

The Host

and

Cloverfield had done, the design team had created and animated eight different Kaiju for the movie. Now that GCI and VFX have come so far since Godzilla 1998 and The Host, the creative team behind Pacific Rim had really taken the chance to create these believable monsters to smash around a city and fight robots. We can see from the positive reviews and the fans appreciation for the new Kaiju that CGI and VFX had really brought along the Kaiju genre and really enhanced the experience for fans of the genre and new comers to the genre also.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De36ug7zMPk

Slide8

Godzilla 2014

The most recent of the Kaiju movies that included the use of CGI was the newest Godzilla.

Godzilla

(

Gareth Edwards

2014) was another ‘reimagining’ of the Godzilla

franchiseThe movie did very well for itself and was appreciated by both fan and critic alike. himself Godzilla, the breath-taking CGI and VFX used to create him was exceptional, the technology had really been brought forward from the 1998 remake. Godzilla was given emotions to make him look of a ‘Hero’ like character, instead of the mindless beast. The CGI and VFX had really brought Godzilla to life. This point in time CGI and VFX has been able to create such realistic looking creatures to stomp around cities, we can begin to see more and more film makers beginning to take a higher interest in the genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr0R8CI6fTA

Slide9

In conclusion CGI and VFX have brought the Kaiju genre into a brand new light. We can see that the West taking from the East can both destroy and enhance the Kaiju experience, using older loved characters like Godzilla and remaking them into films such as Godzilla 1998

did not go down well.

Overtime we were able to enhance and improve the technology used for the making of monsters and really bring icons to life.

There

is a lot more to come in the realms of Kaiju movies; the coming years are to bring us ‘Jurassic World’ (Jurassic Park sequel) ‘Skull Island’ (King Kong reboot) ‘Pacific Rim 2’ and even a brand new Godzilla movie.
