Understand the Infant Meal Pattern

Promote BreastfeedingMother breastfeeds her infant on-siteStaff can breastfeed her enrolled infantServe infant expressed milk

Infant Meal PatternTwo age groupsDevelopmental readiness (before, at or after 6 months old) Food components beginning with “zero” Does not mean optional Program must offer foods at all ages

Breakfast, Lunch, Supper CANNOT serve grain items (pancakes, ready-to-eat cereals, waffles) that are served to older children

SnackJuice cannot be servedIFIC or ready-to-eat breakfast cereals (sugar limits apply) Fruit, Vegetable or combination of both

Identify Creditable Foods

Foods to Offer: Purees to SolidsInfants can eat off the center menu Baby-led weaning – ok in CACFP As Infant Becomes Developmentally Ready

Keeping Infants Safe Unused formula MUST be discarded after the “use by” date on the container

Correctly Claim Infant Meals

Offer Meals to Infants Parent/guardian chooses to accept or decline Cannot require parents/guardians to provide formula or foods

Claiming Meals and Snacks

8 month old drinks breast milk and parent provides organic FVsProgram providing infant cereal Claiming Meals and Snacks Cannot Claim: Parent supplies more than 1 component

11 month old drinks program-supplied formulaParents provide foods for meals (breakfast and lunch)At snack, infant eats program-supplied crackers/bread Claiming Meals and Snacks Cannot claim breakfast and lunch: Parent supplies more than 1 component Claim snack: Program supplies all components

Recording Infant Meals Do not complete for an infant whose meals you do not claim 1 form per infant each month

Record meals and snacks to be claimed on Meal Count Chart Recording Infant Meals
