Autumn TermWeek 1(Week B) Welcome Back Bithna! Welcome Back! Sharpened Saws; Glad to be Back! Welcome back to Summer! Year 3: World War 2 This week ,Year 3 went back in time to the late 1930s to launch our ‘Evacuees from World War 2’ topic. On Monday, on arrival to school, the air raid siren sounded and the children were quickly ushered down to the underground bunker (AKA Dyslexia Centre) to hear the announcement by Neville Chamberlain that Britain were at War.

As secret spies, the children had to solve the clues to get to different areas of the school and complete activities in order to collect letters which spelt out a word. The children learnt the Lambert Walk, enjoyed playground games from the 1930s period, gained an insight into rationing and began to recognise different communication methods which were used (Morse code/semaphore). Year 3 UpdateWorld War 2 Everyone had a wonderful time and the children all looked absolutely brilliant in their Evacuee outfits.

Year 3 Update The children also demonstrated their wonderful knowledge of ancient Egyptian times through a presentation. After visiting the museum café, our visitors were all pleased to receive our free gift from the museum shop – a fabric bag hand decorated (by the children) with hieroglyphics. The children looked absolutely fabulous in their costumes and all the donated homemade cakes were absolutely delicious. Thank you to all those who came to our Museum – we were overwhelmed by the support. Ancient Egyptian DayAt the end of last term, Year 3 invited parents to the opening of our Ancient Egyptian Museum. Playing the role of tour guides, the children enthusiastically showed the parents around the exhibits they had made - from Shadufs to Sarcophagus’ and death masks to pyramids.

Predicting, investigating and drawing conclusions is exactly what Year 3 have been doing this week. We have been developing our scientific enquiry skills by completing several experiments linked to rocks and soils. Here, we are testing the strength of different types of rocks and the absorbency of different soils. We have had great fun!Year 3 Update

Here are the Prep School Participants for the BSME Music Festival this weekend.Best of luck!

Qur’an Competition: Sam IdrisJust before the Spring Break, Sam Idris (6 Sahara) did a sterling job in representing Jahili in the annual Brighton College Qur’an Competition. He qualified for the next round against Brighton College Al Ain in the Year 6 Non-Native category. We wish Sam the very best of luck in the final, which takes place later this term.

Georgina Ballerina Whilst many of us were enjoying a restful Spring Break, Georgina Keen (6 Sahara) was busy practising for her grade 4 ballet exam, which she passed with flying colours.Congratulations Georgina!

Sharpening Our SawsIt has been wonderful to be back in school this week after a fun-filled Spring Break. Our saws are well and truly sharpened and we are ready to take on the Summer Term with a spring in our steps! Here are some of Jahili 's holiday highlights : I went to Singapore, where I had breakfast with the monkeys and visited Universal Studios.Mrs Cowell5 SaharaI had a fabulous time in London; we went to see the West End Show ‘Matilda’ which was phenomenal! During the holiday I had the best time because my grandma, my auntie, and my two cousins came to visit. We had an amazing time, here’s how!Day 1: We had a relaxing stroll to the beach and pool. It was the first time that my 7 month old cousin had touched sand, it was so funny!Day 2: We drove to Dubai to have a look around Dubai Mall. After the adults went shopping, we had a trip to Kidzania (which was amazing!). Day 3: The third day of their tip we went to Yas Mall where my 8 year old cousin bought souvenirs for her friends back in England.Day 4: We went to Heritage Village and found out about the history of the UAE. We learnt all about how they make abayas, carpets and even boats!Day 5: This was the last day before our guests went home, so we relaxed around the pool and celebrated by having a traditional Sunday lunch – yum!Ava Stoddart7 JahiliAt Home…

During the break I was very lucky to visit Thailand and Singapore with my family. After a day of rest when we arrived in Singapore, the fun began. Some of the highlights were: visiting an aquarium; having fun at a water park and eating at the Hard Rock Café.In Thailand we got to do white water rafting, which was fabulous! The resort where we stayed had lots of activities to do and we all did some snorkelling – it was really great. Christian Perry7 JahiliAnd Away…

BITHNA NEWS BITHNA HOUSE FUN DAYThe Bithna House Fun-Day was the last of the House Fun Days for this academic year, but it proved to be a fantastic occasion and one that offered lots of different activities on a fun filled afternoon. The pupils had a chance to ‘Win A Butler’ for lunch-time. Enthusiastic teachers such as Mr Gardner, Mr Hannigan and Mr Espada donned their butlering attire and were at the service of some lucky winners! Mrs Bourne and Miss Attfield also volunteered and offered an excellent butler service.“Soak the Teacher” is always a firm favourite amongst school pupils. The pictures opposite do not lie…the teachers who kindly volunteered for this got absolutely drenched including Mr Scott who had a fair few sponges thrown at him!A big thanks must go to all the Bithna mums who helped out in preparing the lovely bake sale. Mrs Khan and Mrs Rameshni were very helpful in the overall preparations and contributed to raising in the region of 15000 AED on the day which will go to the local Red Crescent charity.Above all else, the pupils of the Prep school had a very enjoyable afternoon and hopefully Bithna will be able to put on something similar next year.

GOAL !I’M REALLY ENJOYING THIS!The Humanities Department were always the best dressed!Arghhhhh!Butler anyone?

Fujairah Updates !Welcome Back! It was so lovely to see everyone again and hear all about their holidays. The weather is starting to get hotter; please can your child remember to bring in their named hat every day. Finally, if you have any unwanted books or board games then the House Room would be very grateful for them! Freya and Basil in Year 3 both had a fantastic holiday. Basil’s highlight was going on a quad bike for the first time whilst Freya loved spending time with her cousins. But both of them are pleased to be back at school; Basil is looking forward to doing lots more work this term and Freya has enjoyed catching up with all of her friends.

The World Championships were held in Glasgow with the competition lasting 10 days. There were 5000 girls and boys competing from all over the world. No one under 10 years was allowed to compete as a solo . Erin and Maebh were in a team of 8 who came in as European champions. Their team mates ranges in age from 7 to 10. A total of 38 teams competed for their dance and they came 20th. So they came 20th in the world! What an amazing achievement. Erin said apart from the actual dance the best part was being able to wear fake tan and make up for the first time!Erin and Maebh at the World Irish Dancing Championships!

I danced in the youngest solo category, 10-11 year olds. There were 137 girls in my section from all over the world. It was nervous and scary but I managed to dance! The standard was amazing and I was proud that I did my best. On the second day of the competition my Ceili team danced. It was the biggest stage that we had ever danced on. I felt less nervous being with my friends in front of the judges instead of just by myself. It was all a great experience and I hope that I manage to qualify again for next year

Welcome back!I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break over the Spring holiday; since our return to school, I have been hearing about all of the activities and travels of the children in Hosn, and they are very lucky indeed!Upcoming eventsThe first week back has run smoothly and has been quiet in comparison to last term. In addition to the upcoming examinations later in the term, Hosn’s main focuses are Speech Day (Thursday 2nd June) and the House Quiz.Hot weatherIn preparation for the imminent arrival of hot weather, I would like to take this opportunity to remind us all of the requirement for a hat and water bottle, both named and with the child’s House included, every day. This is to minimise the risk of dehydration, sunstroke and sunburn.Hosn AppealFinally, I would like to appeal for your participation in the Hosn appeal for donations for games, toys and books which can be used within the House Room; the hot weather means that pupils spend more time indoors at break times, and it would be wonderful if families could donate one item each, to provide variation. There will be lunchtime movies, clubs and activities on offer during this time, but any additional resources would be gratefully received. If you are willing and able to participate to this appeal, donations may be given in to me in the House Room, or handed in to reception.Thank you in advance, and I look forward to keeping in touch throughout the term.Jennifer WhiteHMM Hosn

Raising the Flag The first week back at school saw Hosn ‘raising the flag’. This ceremony takes place every morning at 7.45am, and pupils stand still whist singing the National Anthem. Pupils must be praised this week for their mature and respectful behaviour during the ceremony, but need to sing more confidently; this is especially true considering that we are champions of the House Shout!
