The Nervous System

Central Nervous System

Central Core

Includes the Medulla (Breathing) Cerebellum (Motor coordination), the Thalamus (Relay station), and the Hypothalamus (Thirst/Hunger/Blood pressure, etc.) Slide5

The Nervous System

Central Nervous System

Limbic System

Limbic (Latin for border or belt) Controls emotional life and memory formation. Includes the

Hippocampus,

Hypothalamus,

Amydala

,

septum (pleasure center)

and Pituitary glad. Slide6

Central Nervous System

Cerebrum

This is the largest part of the brain, composed of the left and right hemisphere. Contains lobes.Slide7

The Nervous System

Peripheral Nervous System

Somatic Nervous System

Transmits information about external stimulation from (senses) skin, muscles and joints to the Central Nervous System.

Controls our voluntary movements. Slide9

The Nervous System

Peripheral Nervous System

Autonomic “Automatic” Nervous System

Sympathetic Nervous System

Active in emotional or excited states. Works as a unit. When you are excited your pupils dilate, heart speeds up, you perspire, etc. Slide11

The Nervous System

Peripheral Nervous System

Autonomic “Automatic” Nervous System

Parasympathetic Nervous System

Active in relaxed states. Stimulates one organ at a time. Ex: slows heart rate.

¡Para!=Stop/Slow downSlide12

Please explain which part of the autonomic nervous system (either parasympathetic or sympathetic) is at work in the following scene: Over the past several months you have applied to several colleges. As you approached the mailbox yesterday you saw a letter from DePaul University. (Your top choice for school.) Your heart started to race, your palms began to sweat, and your pupils dilated. Finally, you managed to get the letter open. You were accepted! Eventually your heart rate decreased and your pupils returned to their normal state and you quit sweating.
