2. CONGRATULATIONS Winona Schwols, CHAI Award Winner!!Winona and several nurses from the Fargo VA recently provided COVID-19 support to community nursing homes in Minnesota. When these VA nurses came to the community nursing homes, they were welcomed with open arms and some with cheers providing much needed help and relief to healthcare workers, some of whom had been working long shifts 17 days in a row. VA staff helped stand up COVID + units in the community nursing homes, arranged PPE, provided education on donning and doffing PPE, and educated on other infection control practices established in the VA. Pictured from left to right include: Timothy Vogel, Dustin Halle, Jane Matejcek, Winona Schwols, Koltyn Klose, Jen Ackerson, Martha Burns and Amy Fredrickson. Winona provided care in three different long term care facilities; she agreed to travel on May 28th and quickly mobilized on June 1st.  She stayed for three weeks in Minneapolis to provide patient care and transitioned to a new facility each week. Minnesota was hit particularly hard and FEMA was involved asking for staff volunteers to assist with critical staffing shortages. Winona had prior long term care experience and wanted to help contribute during the COVID-19 pandemic to pay it forward. She described this as a positive experience during a scary time. She felt safe and supported during these assignments with appropriate training and PPE resources and would gladly volunteer again if needed to support the VA’s 4th Mission and to help bridge resources during crisis. We are proud of our Primary Care staff in the field for their heroism during COVID-19! Submitted by Jami Falk
