Overview
The Big Three met at Tehran, Iran to discuss military strategy against Germany and Japan.
Address relations between the Allies, Turkey, and Iran and strengthen the cooperation of the US, Great Britain, and USSR in WWII.
Establish agreement to launch major offensive on Eastern Front to divert German troops away from Allied campaign in Northern France.Slide4
Declaration of the Three Powers
Agreed to provide economic assistance to Iran, as may be possible, having regard to the Three Powers’ world-wide military operations.
The Three Powers are at one with the Iran Government in their desire to maintain independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Agreed that Turkey should come into war and side with the Allies.Slide5
“Operation Overlord”
The invasion of Northern France launched during May 1944 (D-Day invasion of Normandy).
Attacks would combine the forces of UK, Canada, US, and other allied countries.
Done to open up a Northern and Western front with an ultimate goal of freeing Nazi-occupied Western Europe.An overwhelming success (with major casualties only occurring at Juno and Omaha Beach)Slide6
“Operation Dragoon”
Perhaps the most significant outcome of the Tehran Conference was the decision to open another offensive front on Germany.
The plan to open the second front in France, was called Operation Dragoon
Operation Dragoon entailed the Allied invasion of Southern France Decision was made to complete Operation Dragoon by May 1st.Slide7
Other Decisions
The Big Three agreed that the their respected military staffs of the Three Powers should keep open lines of communication for the nearing operations in Europe.
They also agreed that they should collectively create a cover plan to confuse the enemy if necessary. Slide8
