From Early 1600s to Mid-1700s
British government and colonists had a positive relationship.
British government largely left colonies alone to govern themselves.
Colonists left alone with little control by the British government.This system worked well for “everyone.”Slide3
French and Indian War
Conflict between France and Britain in mid-1700s over territories around the world, including colonies in what became the U.S.
Colonists fought on the side of the British because they were British colonists.
We beat the French and the war ended in 1763.Slide4
Impacts of the French and Indian War
It was an expensive war and Britain had to pay debt.
The British government thought the colonists should help pay this debt through taxes since this war benefited them.
Britain had a lot more land to govern because they won.
British government had to create more/new rules.
Colonists resented new laws and taxes. This was mostly because they had no say in what was happening.

War Breaks Out!
Colonists and British troops fired upon each other outside of Boston at Lexington and Concord in 1775.
The British thought if they showed force, the Patriots (colonists) would give up, but they did not.
