His Route
Traveled down the St. Lawrence river, which he followed until he reached a large island that was ruled by hills.
He named the St. Lawrence river
Named the island Mont Royal which is now known as Montreal.
Where was he going?
Cartier was sent by King Francis I to the New World, in search of riches and a new route to Asia (1534).
