1. Living well with Type 2 Diabetes Hull and East Riding Diabetes Network

What is Type 2 Diabetes?Diabetes Type 2 normally affects people over the age of 40 but can also affect anyone.Diabetes is caused by having too much sugar in your blood.Sometimes your body does not make enough insulin.Sometimes your body can not use insulin properly. Insulin helps your body to use blood sugar to keep you active and well.  

3. Symptoms of Type 2 DiabetesFeeling very thirsty Weeing a lot, mainly at night time.Feeling very tired, often after eating.Weight loss.Itchiness around the vagina or penis.

4. Thrush is lots of white dots on your tongue Blurred vision Skin infections If you notice any of these symptoms please visit your doctor as soon as possible

5. How Type 2 Diabetes is diagnosed? Your doctor or practice nurse will find out if you have diabetesThe blood and wee test will tell you if you have diabetes or not The doctor or nurse will need to take some blood You may have to wee into a tub for the doctor to see if there is any sugar present

6. Type 2 Diabetes can cause these problems if not treated Kidneys may not work properly leading to kidney disease Stroke (face drops down on one side)Long term sight loss A tight pain in your chest Foot problems such as open cuts that do not heal

7. Problems during sex.Loosing baby inside of you.Baby being born dead.

8. Treatment options:You may need to take tablets to control your Eat regular healthy meals.Do not eat to many carbohydrates and fats Insulin injections help control the amount of sugar in your body Plenty of exercise to loose weight if you are overweight Stop smoking

9. You will have to visit your doctor every 2-6 months to monitor your sugar levels You may have to monitor your blood sugars at home as well It is important to have regular check ups with your doctor or practice nurse  The doctor will show you how to do this

10. It is important that you go to the doctors for Annual Health Check once a year. The doctor will do an overall health check to make sure that you are well Your feet will be checkedYou will have a photograph of the back of your eyesThe doctor will check your weight The doctor will take your blood pressure

11. Top tips to remember: Choose the right foods Take your medication at the right time Do lots of exercise If you do all of this It will help you to keep wellIf you are worried, talk to your doctor or nurse
