TREATMENT OPTIONS AS DISEASE SEVERITY INCREASES
Please note each case of hip and/or groin pain is specific and treatment options will vary from patient to patient.Slide3
Pain Killers
and
Steroid InjectionsAdvantages:
Avoid surgery Disadvantages:Often improves but does not resolve painMay not improve functionSteroids require injection and may only work for a limited period of timeAid in alleviating swollen joints and therefore can possibly help reduce pain in the hip.Slide4
Key Hole Surgery
(Arthroscopy)
Advantages:Day-case procedure
May reduce risk of developing OA, but not yet known (see FAIT study) Disadvantages:Less effective if patient has early stages of OALike all surgical procedures there is always a risk of complicationsCan take 12 months to derive full benefit
Through minor incisions, surgeons scrape away the excess pieces of bone rubbing down the joint and causing hip pain.Slide5
Hip
Replacement
Advantages:Definite treatment for source of pain
Disadvantages:Major surgery with possible complicationsJoint replacements may only last 15-20 years before revision surgery required (even bigger surgery)10% of people have on going painMajor surgery that requires the surgeon to go in and alter the hip with, depending on the case- ceramic on ceramic, ceramic on polyethylene (plastic), or metal on polyethylene.Slide6
Physiotherapy
Advantages:
Can be used as a non-surgical option Can be used in addition to key hold surgery or hip replacement
May reduce risk of developing OA, but that is not known yet (see FAIT study) Disadvantages:Depending on your case it may not be enough to relieve the painCan be used separately or in addition to any of the other treatment options listed previously. A trained physiotherapist would work with you on your condition to create a treatment regime. Much of their prescribed treatment would require work in your personal time with regular visits over a certain time period to see how you are progressing.Slide7
Surgical Results
According to the National Joint Registry (NJR) 86,488 hip procedures were recorded in the UK in 2012
8Patients were followed up post surgery and answered questions about their progress:
Q1: Satisfaction after the operation (Describe the results of the operation)Q2: Success: Problems now compared to before operationQ1 Results:Over 73% of the patients recorded Excellent or Very GoodQ2 Results:Over 85% of the patients recorded Much Better
