Homophobia in Sports

Often times, homophobic incidents occur in more masculine perceived sports as homosexuality can be seen as a threat

Homophobia in sports can occur in many forms

A common stereotype against Gay and Lesbian

players is that they are bound to mess up “locker room dynamics” by sexually harassing other players. When people do come out, fans and the media alike are very likely to criticize them. Many gay athletes prefer to stay in the closet

Slide4

Slurs from fans

Gay Slurs are quite a common way of a sports fan expressing discontent for a player.

Unfortunately, large organizations are rarely doing anything to stop this.

Some games that have aired on TV have had to be censored out because of audience members shouting offensive slurs.

Slide5

StereotypesGay men are often stereotyped as feminine and untalented at the sports they do.

Not fitting with a stereotype can cause confusion and anger.

Stereotyping can lead to players not being taken seriously.

When Michael Sam came out, there was a lot of anger as he was not living up to the stereotypes set for him

Change

While it may be happening slowly, a wave of positive change is

occuring

within many sports.

Manchester United, when it became the first UK football club to join up with Stonewall, an organization to help combat

homophobia. One person tweeted that they’d rather support a rival club, but the Bolton Wanderers protested that.
