ORIGINS AND LOCATIONS:

RappingThe main characteristic of rap music is of course – the rapping. A style of spoken lyrics set to music. The songs are typically made with a looping beat (keeps going over and over) with the rapper saying words over it. Often times you will hear a “hook” or a chorus with a notable melody.Beat boxingDoug. E Fresh was the first known beat-boxer DJ-ingRecord ScratchingLong before the 2010’s Rap music used DJ’s to create the sounds in the backgrounds. They would play different records, make scratching noises and “sample” music from other artists. Now a days, most beats are computer generated.Poetic lyrics, sang or spoken to a beat in 4/4 timeLyrical themes range from tough upbringing, gang lifestyles, money, girls, cars, fame, violence and drugs

CHARACTERISTICS:

TYPICAL INSTRUMENTS:

Instruments are rarely used in live rap performances. The sounds are typically produced by a machine, a computer and possibly a looping machine and drum machinesThe Roland TR-808 drum machine was introduced in 1980Before this technology was popular, artists used beat boxing and record scratchingNow a days, ”producers” are a huge part of the hip hop world. They create beats using various computer instruments, voices and samplingPopular producers: Rick Rubin, Dr. Dre, Q-Tip, DJ Mustard, Pharell, Kanye West, Zaytoven, Statik Selektah, Earl Sweatshirt, Timbaland

CONTROVERSIES:

Harsh and aggressive lyrics stemmed a lot of protest. There was a great deal of use of expletives, including the “N” word, which caused controversy

Rappers from NWA actually inspired the government to look more closely at putting an advisory label on rap records

Is there any “clean” rap out there anymore?

There were many songs that talked badly about police officers

Drugs and alcohol, and lavish lifestyle seemed to influence the youth into acting similarly

Deaths and gang related issues occurred frequently killing some very big names in the industry

What other controversies can you think of?

CONNECTIONS:

Think about

all

we have learned in class this year:

How does this genre of music connect with

Blues

?

Jazz? Country?

What do Rap

and

blues have in common?

Are

there any other

genres of music that show a great deal of emotion

?

Are there similar stereotypes between rap and other genres?

What cultural similarities does

rap

music have with other genres?

Slide10

TODAY IN RAP:

Today, Rap is the 2

nd

best selling genre behind country

Very expensive to produce

Collaborations, collaborations, collaborations. Doesn’t anyone just do their own thing anymore?

Culture is said

to

be shaping

an unrealistic and negative image of

women

Fancy cars, clothes and shoes - rap

sells you a lifestyle.

Auto tune? Talent? Words you cannot understand? Just beats?

Mumble rap???

What do you think?

WRITE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE BACK OF YOUR STUDY GUIDE IN THE “OTHER” SECTION
