Mission and Aim

PCOSB is

committed to developing evidence-based, sustainable, community-based solutions to childhood obesity among underserved and ethnic minority youth in Broward County.

In the first tier, we aim to learn more from those in the community who have a vested interest in pediatric obesity with a special focus on improving the health of underserved and ethnic minority youth and families.

Initial Engagement and Progress

School-based BMI screening and surveillance program implemented statewide in 2003.

Limited research on school-based BMI screenings suggests that notification alone is unlikely to have an impact on pediatric obesity.

School nurse expressed concerns of the challenges of BMI screenings.

To date, we have had the opportunity to meet and connect with the school principal, school nurse, school administrators, and parents of students at the school.

We have learned more about the perceived challenges from each of these individuals and have used this feedback to help inform the partnership.
