MITRE – Who we are and what we do

As a not-for-profit organization, MITRE works in the public interest across federal, state and local governments, as well as industry and academia. We solve problems for a safer world. Through our federally funded R&D centers and public-private partnerships, we work across government to tackle challenges to the safety, stability, and well-being of our nation.

Design Thinking and Foresight: MITRE’s experience integrating these approaches

Case Study:MITRE’s University Innovation Exchange – Smart Cities

The intended goal of the Smart Cities workshop was to identify current challenges and future innovations related to the emergence of Smart Cities and explore the broad impacts of smart cities on the public. Attendees brainstormed potential research and research applications, as well as opportunities to collaborate and share research results.

Participants:

MITRE Employees and Researchers from: Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, George Mason University, Virginia Economic Partnership and National Science Foundation

Request:

Facilitate a 4-hour workshop to encourage futures thinking and meet intended goals of the workshop

The Workshop Kicked Off with Foresight Exercises

Foresight Exercises (2 hours)Trend Exploration

Introduce and distribute general Trend Cards

Utilize the Disruption Pyramid to explore the trends

Scenario Development/Exploration

Brainstorm Forces Based on the Trends Analysis, in a large group, identify forces that may affect smart cities in the future. Organize by social, technological, economic, environmental, and politicalSelect top patterns and create 2x2 Dot vote on the list of patterns to identify the top forces

Create 2x2 based on the forces and identify titles of scenarios

The Workshop Then Integrated Design Thinking

Design and Wrap-up Exercises (2.5 hours)Human Centered Design of each Scenario

Identify stakeholders most affected by each scenario (citizen, small business owner, municipal authority, urban/city planners, industry, sector specific providers)

Create an empathy map for each stakeholder to understand what they may be saying, hearing, thinking/feeling, doing

Identify insights based on pain points and opportunities

Gallery walk of the scenarios/empathy maps and post the following:Existing research they have participated (or are participating in) that would be relevant to a scenario or stakeholder in one color

New research ideas that would be relevant to a scenario or stakeholder in another color

The pairing of foresight and design thinking can help teams explore new opportunities by creating a more immersive sense of the future

Based on this experiment, we explored opportunities for “Futures Design” and developed the following high-level approach:
