Slide2What is Cancer? How it affects the body.
A group of diseases that involves a rapid, uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.
Cancer harms the body by destroying healthy tissues.
Tumor- Mass of tissue formed by cancerous cells.
Malignant=cancerous
Benign=not cancerous
Metastasis- The spreading of cancer to other parts of the body from where it first develops.
Can grow into surrounding tissues or break away and travel though blood vessels or lymph vessels.
Can be cured if detected early!
Slide3Causes of Cancer
Heredity- inherit genes that change, mutate into too rapidly.
Oncogene- normal gene that has changed into a cancer-causing gene.
Environment- contains cancer-causing agents called Carcinogens.
Cause mutations in genes that control cell reproduction.
Possible carcinogens:
UV lightX-raysTobacco productsAsbestosPesticides
Slide4Types of Cancer
Slide5Detecting and Treating Cancer
Tests
The key to curing cancer is early detection and treatment!
Regular screening tests(mammograms, chest x-rays, physicals)
Biopsy- removing small tissue sample for testing
Treatments
Depends on type, location, and stage of developmentSurgery- remove part or all of tumorRadiation- kill cancer cells/slow tumor growthChemotherapy- drugs used to slow reproduction of cancer cells
Immunotherapy- drugs to stimulate the body’s immune system to attach cells
Remission- signs/symptoms disappear, after 5 years considered cured
Slide6Preventing Cancer
Early detection is key!
Self-examining your body for abnormal lumps.
Routine/regular check-ups with your doctor.
Behaviors that decrease the risk of cancer:
NO tobacco
Avoid alcoholProtective clothing/sunscreen Diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol Exercise regularlyNo unnecessary X-rays
Avoid known carcinogens
Slide7Slide8Activity
Choose one type of cancer. Use your phone(or book) to research this cancer.
Skin, prostate, breast, lung, colorectal, cervical, oral, non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, ovarian, leukemia
Write a summery of this type of cancer to include:
What it is
Symptoms
Ways to check for itHow to prevent itHow it can be treated
