Slide2Who?
The teachers of my (pretend) elementary school where I am the (pretend) school librarian.
What?
This three-hour long workshop will be offered as part of a teacher in-service.
Slide3Why?Necessary for some. Good for all.
In UDL, considering the learning goals precedes the selection of materials (Backwards Design)iPads offer a wealth of educational benefits and have the added bonus of being highly acceptable socially.

Assistive technology is given reactively, after evaluations and referrals.UDL is given to everyone as part of the design, knowing that those who need certain tools will use them.Edyburn

Slide5“A UDL teacher eliminates barriers to learning by deliberately planning curriculum that all students can access.”
Research by Jean Anyon (1980):
“If we offer students a remedial curriculum or run a structured schedule that allows minimal freedom, we are unconsciously preparing our students to aim low. When students are not given freedom of choice or taught critical-thinking skills, they are less likely to develop the tools they need to fulfill aspirations later in life.”

Slide8Workshop:Introduction to UDL
The Smart Board is prepped with four different tabs which I will use to activate four different digital
tools: Speak
It,
Glogster
,
Voki
and Dragon
Dictation.
I also have an iPad set up to use
Aurasma
.
The
point of the following is
:
to
provide an attention-getting introduction to
UDL
to emphasize the many different technological possibilities we have at our fingertips to reach our students.

Slide14Reflection
It is my hope that after participating in this introductory workshop to UDL, teachers will be encouraged to:
-learn
more about
it
- join
with other teachers who feel the urge to work towards its incorporation
- begin
to implement the principles of UDL into their approach to instructional design.
