The Balkans - 1914Slide5

The Balkans

Late 1800s, the Ottoman Empire was in decline

.

By 1888, Greece, Serbia, Romania, and Montenegro were independent.

Bulgaria operated independently with protection from

Russia

Bosnia and Herzegovina were under the protection of Austria-Hungary. Slide6

The Balkans

Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina outright.

Look up and write down the definition of

annexed

(

as it refers to a country annexing another)

Serbia was looking for a larger kingdom and had their eye on those two countries.

Russia supported the Serbs in their quest for a larger kingdom.

The Black Hand was a Serbian terrorist organization that wanted to free Bosnia from Austria-Hungary.

Archduke Ferdinand

Archduke Ferdinand is the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary

.

Ferdinand and his wife visited Sarajevo in Bosnia for a “states visit.” Slide8

The Assassination(Just read the story on the next two pages and summarize it in a few sentences in your notes)

Early on June 28th, 1914, six members of the Black Hand lay in wait for the motorcade carrying the Archduke and his pregnant wife, Sophie. The motorcade passed the 1

st

two assassins, but they failed to act. The third assassin threw a bomb at the carriage of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife. The bomb glanced off the auto carriage and because it had a 10 second delay, it exploded under the auto carriage of the accompanying car behind them, seriously injuring the occupants and bystanders. Having failed, the assassin swallowed cyanide and then jumped in the near by river to escape, but it was only 5” deep. The cyanide was too old and just made him throw up. He was grabbed by police and severely beaten before being taken into custody.Slide9

The Assassination

Archduke Ferdinand continued on and gave his speech. After the speech the Archduke and Sophie decided on visiting the hospital where the victims of the bombing had been taken. When leaving his driver took a wrong turn and had to reverse the car, causing it to stall by a café.

Gavrilo

Princip

, a member of the back hand was coming out of the café right when the car stopped. Gavrilo took a gun from under his coat and fired twice. The first round struck the archduke’s wife in the stomach. The second round struck the archduke near the heart. Archduke Ferdinand is said to have said, “Sophie, my Sophie, don’t die, live for our children.” and then he died.
