Purpose of the Title VIA grant Make SMC CTE students aware of the value of knowing languages other than English so that they can use this language in the workplace and in their personal lives. Provide experiential learning opportunities for nursing and other health sciences students so that they can use Chinese, Spanish, Korean or Japanese in the workplace.
Argentina Study Abroad SPRING 2020 Students from Communications and Media Studies Department, Modern Languages and Cultures, and Health Sciences Department enroll as a cohort in an online Spanish 20 (Latin American Civilization—3 units), Spanish 99 (Experiential Learning—1 unit), an online Health 60 (Multicultural Health and Healing Practices—3 units), and a hybrid Media 20 (Introduction to Writing and Producing Short Form Media—3 units). Interested students are also encouraged to enroll in a hybrid Spanish 8 (Conversation---2 units). During the second half of the spring semester, students in the cohort will study for 3 weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Students will reside with Argentinean families for 3 weeks and collaborate with Argentinean students during Spring 2020. Students work together and collaborate with Argentinean students on a capstone project to create media that focuses on the health issues of the Argentinean people.
