IDENTICAL TWINS

Questions:

What is an identical twin?

How do identical twins form? How likely is it for a woman to give birth to identical twins? Are identical twins more likely to have birth defects?

Can identical twins be a boy and a girl?

Answers:

A pair of twins who are from a single fertilized ovum, they are alike in all genetic characteristics and appearance

Identical twins result when a single zygote divides in two and develops as two separate embryos

Around one in every three sets of twins are identical the other 2/3 are a part of the non-identical variety

Yes, not just identical twins but any sets of multiples are more likely to have risks of health issues due to the higher risk of being born premature

No, identical twins are always the same sex because they form from a single zygote that contains either male or female sex chromosomes. So, boy and girl twins can only be fraternal

Fraternal twins

Questions:

What is a fraternal twin? Are fraternal twins exactly alike?

What is a zygote?Do twins share the same placenta? Can fraternal twins have two different fathers?

Answers:

Fraternal are twins are two different sperms that  fertilize two different eggs, since they are two different eggs the two do not look alike.

No, like any siblings they can have completely different personalities and they look different.

A zygote is a newly fertilized egg.

No, they do not share the same placenta they are either separate or conjoined.  Yes, fraternal twins can have two different fathers. Two eggs from the same mother have to get fertilized by two different me in the same ovulation period

Slide4

Conjoined twins

Questions:

What is a conjoined twin? Are conjoined twins rare? Can you separate conjoined twins? Are conjoined twins identical as well? When might the conjoined twin start to form?

Answers:

Conjoined twins are identical twins that are born with their body connected or joined in some way.

Conjoined twins are extremely rare. One in every 200,000 twins births are conjoined.

Some conjoined twins can be separated through surgery, but some that are conjoined at certain parts, can't be separated if they want to live.

Conjoined twins are always identical and the same sex.

Conjoined twins form when the egg inside the mother doesn’t split all the way, as it does when an identical twin is formed.

CONCLUSION

The topic we choose was very interesting and was fascinating to know that each type of twin had something different about it. For example, we learned that fraternal twins can have two different dads. Another thing we learned while researching our topic of fraternal, identical, and conjoined twins was that identical twins do not "run in the family", but fraternal twins do. Releasing on egg in a single cycle is actually a genetic trait that can be passed from mother to child.  Overall we thought the topic was very unique and interesting and we learned that twins are just like any other siblings. Some of them may look alike but that doesn't mean the act alike.
