THE BATTLE OF ORIGINS!
Lesson #10
What About
the Dinosaurs?
Slide2WHAT ABOUT THE
DINOSAURS?
Slide3Dinosaurs
Did dinosaurs really exist?
Are dinosaurs just stories found in legends
and fairy tales?
If they did exist, when did they live?
Were they a part of God’s creation?
Did they live here on earth at the same time
as man?
There are lots of questions we have about dinosaurs, let’s try to answer some of them.
Slide4Dinosaurs
Let’s begin with the question,
“Did dinosaurs really exist?”
YES!
There is no doubt that dinosaurs have existed!
We have discovered their fossilized remains
all around the world, on all seven continents, even in Antarctica!
Slide5Dinosaurs
Great dinosaur graveyards have been found in places like Tanzania, Africa, and at the Dinosaur National Monument on the Colorado/Utah border in the United States. Literally tons of fossilized dinosaur bones have been discovered all around the globe.
Dinosaur National Monument is located on the border of Utah and Colorado. Dinosaur fossils were discovered in the area by Earl Douglass,
a paleontologist, in 1909. The area was declared a National Monument on October 4, 1915.
Slide6Slide7Slide8Slide9Slide10Slide11Slide12Slide13Slide14Slide15Slide16Slide17Slide18Slide19Dinosaurs
The first discovery of dinosaurs, at least in recent times, occurred in England during the spring of 1822 by Dr. Gideon
Mantell
and his wife, Mary Ann.
Dr.
Mantell
was not only a medical doctor but also a well known amateur paleontologist.
One day Mary Ann rode with her husband in their buggy to visit a patient and while the Dr. was inside Mary Ann took a walk down the road and came across a pile of stones that had been placed in the ditch to fill some ruts caused by the spring rains.
Slide20Dinosaurs
Among the stones were what appeared to be very large fossil teeth. She showed them to her husband who was amazed, never having seen such huge teeth before.
He went down to the nearby rock quarry where the stones along side of the road had come from and found more of the same type of teeth that his wife had discovered.
Dr.
Mantell
took these fossilized teeth to several scientists, but none agreed with him that they were actually large teeth from some unknown creature!
Slide21Dinosaurs
But Dr.
Mantell
was sure they were from a large creature that no longer existed and named the owner of the huge tooth,
Iguanodon
, meaning “iguana-tooth” since the teeth were similar to those of an iguana but, of course, much larger!
Several years later, after many more teeth were found, people began to acknowledge that Dr.
Mantell
may have been correct!
Meanwhile, in another rock quarry in
Oxfordshire
, England bones from another giant creature had been discovered.
Slide22Dinosaurs
Thus, began the search for ancient animals that we today call, DINOSAURS!
Where did the word dinosaur come from and what is its meaning?
In 1841 an English scientist named Sir Richard Owen coined the word, “
Dinosauria
” which comes from two
greek
words –
Deinos
;
meaning terrible, powerful, wondrous
Sauros
; meaning lizard
Dinosaur = Terrible Lizard!
Slide23Dinosaurs
Is the word - dinosaur - found in the Bible?
No! Since it was not a word until 1841!
What were these ‘Terrible Lizards” called before the word dinosaur was coined in 1841?
DRAGONS!
Down through the ages there have been lots
of stories about dragons! In fact, just about every culture in the world have stories about men seeing, fighting and killing dragons of all kinds!
Slide24Dinosaurs
Herodotus was a Greek historian who lived in the 5th century BC. Many scholars refer to him as "the Father of History" in Western culture. He was the first historian known to collect his materials systematically, test their accuracy and arrange them in a vivid narrative.
In his work, “The History of Herodotus, Book 2”, Herodotus records an interesting report of flying winged serpents.
Slide25Dinosaurs
“and the story goes that at the beginning of spring winged serpents from Arabia fly towards Egypt, and the birds called ibises meet them
at the entrance of this country and do not suffer the serpents to go by but kill them. On account of this deed it is (say the Arabians) that the ibis has come to be greatly honored
by the Egyptians, and the Egyptians also agree that it is for this reason that they honor these birds."
Slide26Slide27Dinosaurs
Marco Polo who was a great trader and explorer who travelled the world between 1271-1298 A.D. described what sounds like a dragon.
In the book, “The Travels of Marco Polo” in part 2 chapter 40, Marco Polo reports….
"Leaving the city of
Yachi
, and traveling ten days in a westerly direction, you reach the province
of
Karazan
, which is also the name of the chief city....Here are seen huge serpents, ten paces
in length (about 30 feet), and ten spans
(about 8 feet) girt of the body.”
Slide28Dinosaurs
“At the fore part, near the head, they have two short legs, having three claws like those of a tiger, with eyes larger than a
forepenny
loaf and very glaring.”
Slide29Slide30Dinosaurs
“The jaws are wide enough to swallow a man, the teeth are large and sharp, and their whole appearance is so formidable, that neither man, nor any kind of animal can approach them without terror.”
Pliny the Elder who was an author, naturalist, philosopher as well as a naval and army commander of the Roman Empire and lived from 23 to 79 A.D.
He wrote many books on different subjects, but in the “Book Eight of Natural History” chapter 11 we read…
Slide31Dinosaurs

Slide33Dinosaurs
These are just a few examples of what has been written about dragons (dinosaurs) down through history.
It is
interesting that the
Chinese have an animal Zodiac that
is a
repeating cycle of 12 years and each
year is
represented by an animal such as:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig…
Dragon!
Slide34Dinosaurs
Did dragons (dinosaurs) really exist?
As we have read there are many reports that give us evidence that they did exist at one time.
Does the Bible speak about dragons or dinosaurs? If so, what does it say?
We know that God created land animals on day six along with Adam and Eve.
Slide35Dinosaurs
“Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”
Genesis 1:24-25
This would have included the dinosaurs! We also know that everything created was done
in the six days of creation!
Slide36Dinosaurs
“Thus the heavens and the earth, and
all
the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from
all
His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from
all
His work which God had created and made.” Genesis 2:1-3
“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and
all
that is in them, and rested the seventh day.” Exodus 20:11
Slide37Dinosaurs
“All” includes everything that exist and has existed in our universe! Including Dinosaurs!
These verses talk about dinosaurs in a general way by using the word ‘all’.
Does the Bible specifically speak of or describe creatures that we, today, might call a dinosaur?
Yes! It Does!
Please turn in your Bibles to those passages!
Job 40:15-24
Job 41:1-34
Slide381948

Slide39Dinosaurs
Notice some other passages.
“May those curse it who curse the day, those who are ready to arouse Leviathan.” Job 3:8
“You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters. You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces, and gave him as food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.” Psalms 74:13-14
Slide40Dinosaurs
“There the ships sail about; there is that Leviathan which You have made to play there.”
Psalms 104:26
“In that day the Lord with His severe sword, great and strong, will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; and He will slay the reptile that is in the sea.”
Isaiah 27:1
Dinosaurs
“The burden against the beasts of the South.
Through a land of trouble and anguish, from which came the lioness and lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches on the backs of young donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people who shall not profit; For the Egyptians shall help in vain and to no purpose.”
Isaiah 30:6-7
Slide42Dinosaurs
What type of animals could God be talking about when He mentions the Behemoth and Leviathan?
Some say that the Behemoth in Job 40 could have been a hippopotamus, an elephant, or maybe a rhinoceros.
Have you seen the tails of a hippopotamus, elephant or rhinoceros?
Do their tails look like a cedar tree?
Slide43Dinosaurs
NO!
Notice these pictures of animals and see if they
fit the description of the Behemoth that God describes in Job 40…
Slide44Slide45Slide46Slide47Dinosaurs
None of these animals seem to fit the description of what we read in Job 40. So what could it have been?
Here are some suggestions or at least something similar. Remember we do not know the exact animal that God is describing.
Slide48Slide49Slide50Slide51Dinosaurs
Whatever God is describing in Job 40, the animal was big and mighty!
“See now, his strength is in his hips, and his power is in his stomach muscles. He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. His bones are like beams of bronze,
His ribs like bars of iron. He is the first of the ways of God; only He who made him can bring near His sword.” Job 40:16-19
Slide52Dinosaurs
What about the Leviathan that is described in Job 41? What type of animal could that be?
Some have suggested that it could be a crocodile.
REALLY?
Slide53Slide54Dinosaurs
We do not know exactly what the Leviathan was but it did seem to be an animal that lived in the water and was big, powerful and mighty. Even more powerful than the Behemoth described in the previous chapter.
These next pictures could be something similar to what God is describing in Job 41.
Slide55Slide56Slide57Slide58Slide59Slide60Slide61Dinosaurs
What was the Leviathan? We do not know exactly. It could be something like the pictures we just saw or something completely different.
What ever the Behemoth and Leviathan were they were some of the most amazing creatures that God had created!
Did the Leviathan really breathe out fire?
Or is that just a myth?
Let’s read Job 41:18-21 again…
Slide62Dinosaurs
“His
sneezings
flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
Out of his mouth go burning lights; sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke goes out of his nostrils, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.” Job 41:18-21
Is it true that Leviathan breathed out fire or was
God exaggerating?
IT WAS TRUE!
Slide63The Bombardier Beetle
A sinister toad closes in on the bombardier beetle. But Instead of a futile attempt to scurry away, the beetle waits, as though surrendering. Just before the toad’s tongue flicks out to snag its victim, the beetle fires its cannon. Pop! Pop! Pop! Out shoots burning gas. The emissions
fire in pulsation, 500 times per second, but the defensive attack is complete before one second passes. Rather than getting a tasty snack, the defeated toad hops away with a mouthful of noxious gasses.
Slide64The Bombardier Beetle
The bombardier beetle’s tail end is equipped with twin “spray nozzles” (or gland openings) to shoot its gaseous ammunition. The gas comes from two reactant chemicals—hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinone. When the beetle contracts its sphincter muscle, these two chemicals mix with catalytic enzymes. The ensuing chemical reaction brings the temperature up to water’s boiling point.
Slide65The Bombardier Beetle
While the one-way valve closes to protect the beetle’s organs, out fires the mixture of gas and steam at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100°C). Some types of bombardier beetles can swivel their gland openings and shoot in nearly all directions using deflection plates. All types hit their target with a marksman’s precision.
Slide66Slide67Slide68The Electric Eel
The electric eel is a South American electric fish, and the only species in its genus. Despite the name, it is not an eel, but rather a knifefish.
The electric eel has three pairs of abdominal organs that produce electricity: the main organ, the Hunter's organ, and the
Sach's
organ. These organs make up four fifths of its body, and give the electric eel the ability to generate two types of electric organ discharges: low voltage and high voltage.
Slide69The Electric Eel
These organs are made of
electrocytes
, lined up so a current of ions can flow through them and stacked so each one adds to a potential difference.
When the eel finds its prey, the brain sends a signal through the nervous system to the
electrocytes
. This opens the ion channels, allowing sodium to flow through, reversing the polarity momentarily. By causing a sudden difference in electric potential, it generates an electric current in a manner similar to a battery,
in which stacked plates each produce an electric potential difference.
Slide70The Electric Eel
The electric eel can make a shock up to 860 volts and 1 ampere of current for two milliseconds. Such a shock is extremely unlikely to be deadly
for an adult human, but can produce a brief and painful numbing shock likened to a stun gun discharge, which due to the voltage can be felt for some distance from the fish; this is a common risk for aquarium caretakers and biologists attempting to handle or examine electric eels.
Slide71The Electric Eel
Is the ability of the eel to produce electricity a
product of evolution or was it created that way
by God?
IT WAS CREATED BY GOD!
Slide72Slide73Slide74Bioluminescent Creatures
Bioluminescence is one of nature’s most amazing phenomena! Certain organisms have the ability to generate and emit light through chemical reactions with oxygen.
Many animals use bioluminescence as camouflage, to attract mates or to scare off predators. Fireflies produce bioluminescent light as do about 90% of deep-sea marine animals!
These are just a few of the animals that are
bioluminescent…
Slide75There are more species of beetles in the world than any other kind of insect. (More than 350,000 different species are estimated, with more being discovered every year.)
The most well known bioluminescent beetle is the firefly. Interestingly, fireflies are not flies, nor do they produce any kind of burning “fire.”
Slide76Bioluminescent Creatures
The more scientists learn about fireflies and other bioluminescent creatures, the more amazed they are at their complexity.
Of course, evolutionist say this
ability of animals to produce light just happened by accident, but we know better!
Notice these amazing
bioluminescent deep-sea creatures!
Slide77Slide78Slide79Slide80Slide81Slide82Slide83Dinosaurs
These are just a few of God’s amazing creatures!
If a beetle can shoot
out boiling
hot gases and smoke, eels can produce electricity and sea creatures can produce and manipulate light, it is quite possible for God to create a creature called Leviathan, that could shoot out fire and smoke!
Were there really fire breathing dragons?
YES THERE
WERE
!
Slide84Dinosaurs
Did the dinosaurs exist with mankind?
YES THEY DID!
God created everything in six days and that means that mankind and dinosaurs lived at
the same time!
“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you.” Job 40:15
No doubt, man and dinosaurs lived together!
Slide85Dinosaurs
From countries all around the world we hear stories about dragons.
We learn about dragons that lived in murky swamps, some that terrorized entire regions, and still others (referred to as “fiery serpents”) that were vicious flying reptiles. As late as the early twentieth century, elderly people in Wales told of having seen winged serpents.
Dinosaurs
“The...winged serpents...were the terror of
young and old alike.... They were coiled when
in repose, and looked as if they were covered
with jewels of all sorts. Some of them had
crests sparkling with all the colors of the rainbow. When disturbed, they glided swiftly, sparkling all over, to their hiding places. When angry, they flew over people’s heads, with outspread wings...”
Slide87Dinosaurs
Other accounts from the British Isles of dragons and/or flying reptiles have survived to the present day. (Cooper, 1995, pp. 130-161).
One account, recorded in a chronicle from 1405, told of a giant reptile at Bures in Suffolk…
Slide88Dinosaurs
“Close to the town of Bures, near Sudbury, there has lately appeared, to the great hurt of the countryside, a dragon, vast in body, with a crested head, teeth like a saw, and a tail extending to an enormous length. Having slaughtered the shepherd of a flock, it devoured many sheep.... In order to destroy him, all the country people around were summoned. But when the dragon saw that he was again to be assailed with arrows, he flew into a marsh and there hid himself among the long reeds, and was no more seen.”
Slide89Dinosaurs
Are these true stories or just myths? Since man and dinosaurs lived together there should be evidence that shows us that they did coexist.
And there is!
Around the world are writings, carvings, drawings, etc. that have been created by cultures showing what seems to be, dinosaurs!
Notice these examples….

Alexander the Great and Dragons
In 330 BC, after Alexander the Great invaded India, he brought back reports of seeing a great hissing dragon living in a cave, which people were worshiping as a god. One of Alexander
the Great's lieutenants stated that the Indian king
Abisarus
kept serpents that were 120
and 210 feet long. Subsequent Greek rulers
are said to have brought dragons back alive from Ethiopia.

Slide128So what are these three animals?
Slide129Dinosaurs
Petroglyphs were discovered in Havasupai Canyon in Arizona which is part of the
Grand Canyon.
Slide130Slide131Slide132Slide133Dinosaurs
Dr. Hubbard photographed the petroglyph and
eventually placed it in a scientific article titled
“Discoveries Relating to Prehistoric Man by the
Doheny
Scientific Expedition in the
Hava
Supai
Canyon”
(1925, p. 10).
What kind of animal is it? What kind of animal had a long neck, long tail, wide body, and once
roamed northern Arizona?
Dr. Hubbard believed that he had found an
ancient drawing of a dinosaur. He stated…
Slide134Dinosaurs
“The fact that some prehistoric man made a petroglyph of a dinosaur on the walls of this canyon upsets completely all of our theories regarding the antiquity of man....
The fact that the animal is upright and balanced on its tail would seem to indicate that the pre- historic artist must have seen it alive.” (pp. 5,7)
Fossil footprints, found about 100 miles from the drawing, prove that dinosaurs once lived in the same general area of the dinosaur-like rock art.
Slide135Dinosaurs
How could man have drawn such an accurate picture of a creature he supposedly had never
seen?
Remember we said at the beginning of our lesson…
The first discovery of dinosaurs, at least in
recent times, occurred in the spring of 1822
by Dr. Gideon
Mantell
and his wife, Mary Ann.
Evolutionist tell us that man and dinosaurs did not live together, so how could early man so accurately draw animals they had never seen?
Slide136Dinosaurs
The fact is, man once lived with dinosaurs, and the drawings and carvings found in places in Cambodia, Natural Bridges in Utah, Three Rivers, New Mexico, Havasupai in Arizona and many others places around the world serve as strong evidence of the cohabitation of man and dinosaurs!
The evidence proves that mankind and dinosaurs were not separated by millions of years, as the evolutionist tells us, instead the truth is that mankind and dinosaurs lived…
TOGETHER!
Slide137Dinosaurs
God created everything is six literal days.
“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and
all
that is in them, and rested the seventh day.” Exodus 20:11
‘All’ means that both man and dinosaurs were created together during the creation!
God says He created man and dinosaurs together….
“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you.” Job 40:15
Slide138Dinosaurs
It is clear that evolutionist are wrong, but they will never admit that…
man and dinosaurs did coexist!
God’s word is loud and clear….
Slide139Dinosaurs

Genesis 1:1
Slide140Dinosaurs
What happened to the dinosaurs?
This question has puzzled scientists for years!
There have been many theories proposed to try to explain the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Dewey McLean wrote in 1995 that the perplexing mass destruction of the majority of dinosaurs remains “one of the greatest mysteries in all science.”
Slide141Dinosaurs
In
The Scientific American Book of Dinosaurs
, Walter Alvarez and Frank
Asaro
wrote:
“About 65 million years ago, something killed half of all the life on the Earth. This sensational crime wiped out the dinosaurs” (2000, p. 346).
Dewey McLean suggested: “Sixty-five million years ago, some phenomenon triggered mass
extinctions on the lands and in the oceans so profound that they define the geological boundary between the older Mesozoic Era, often called the ‘Age of Reptiles,’ and the modern Cenozoic Era, the ‘Age of Mammals’....
Slide142Dinosaurs
The most popularly held evolutionary view of dinosaur extinction is that a huge, six-mile-wide asteroid crashed into the Earth and caused catastrophic, global devastation.
The problem with such theories is that they
fall short of adequately explaining all the data. For example, no one knows why the effects
of an asteroid striking the Earth would kill the dinosaurs but leave many other forms of life unharmed.
Slide143Dinosaurs
Such as, why did the asteroid not kill other reptiles such as turtles and alligators? What’s more, nothing in the fossil record supports the death of all dinosaurs at once. Though many dinosaurs are found in fossil “graveyards” throughout the world, the evidence also
shows that some lived at a later time.
While creationist disagree with the meteor theory and with the millions of years time frame used by evolutionist they do agree that a major catastrophic event killed off many dinosaurs
sometime in the past.
Slide144Dinosaurs
What could that catastrophic event have been?
THE FLOOD OF NOAH!
The Flood of Noah explains perfectly what happened to the dinosaurs!
And the many ‘dinosaur graveyards’ around the world show evidence of flooding.
Slide145Dinosaurs
The Dinosaur National Monument fossil quarry, on the border of Colorado and Utah, is one of the largest fossil repositories in the world, where over 1,600 fossilized dinosaur bones are buried’.
In the building that covers a major rock face that contains large amounts of dinosaur fossils there is a placard that reads…
Slide146Dinosaurs
“After a seasonal flood: This scene of 145 million years ago is based on clues found in
the rock face behind you. Carcasses brought downstream by the fast-moving, muddy water were washed onto a sandbar. Some were buried completely by tons of sand—their bones preserved in a nearly perfect state”

In 1999, University of Chicago paleontologist Paul
Sereno
uncovered a 65 foot long dinosaur called a
Jabaria
. This skeleton was about 95% complete.

Then in Chile, Robert Sanders, in an article by the University of California, described a huge dinosaur graveyard by noting: “The fossil bones were found strewn throughout an ancient flood deposit in Chile’s Atacama desert, suggesting that they were animals or corpses caught up
in a flood perhaps 110 million years ago.”

In an article discussing the series “Walking with Dinosaurs” it states that the ‘Ghost Ranch’ in New Mexico has one of the richest fossil finds
in the world.
Why did they say there were so many dinosaurs bones buried in this location?
“
Palaeontologists
believe that the collection of fossils was the result of a mass death around
a dwindling water resource during a drought. Before the bodies of the animals were eaten by scavengers, a flash flood buried them in muddy sediments where they were preserved”

What was the cause given for such a massive gravesite?
A paleontologist at Cuenca’s science museum, said that the animals were probably washed
into the fossil bed by “heavy flooding.”

.”
What is the common reason given by scientist for all the large dinosaur graveyards?
Slide155Dinosaurs
FLOODING!
THE FLOOD OF NOAH!
Slide156Dinosaurs
The global Flood of Noah’s day (as recorded in Genesis 6-8) provides an excellent explanation for dinosaur graveyards found around the world.
The Bible explains that “all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows
of heaven were opened. And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights”
Furthermore, “all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered”
The WHOLE WORLD was flooded!
Slide157Dinosaurs
During that year long Flood of Noah, countless thousands of dinosaurs would have drowned and been buried quickly in muddy deposits creating the fossilized dinosaur bones found all around the world.
It is reasonable to conclude that these dinosaur burial grounds became the well-known fossilized graveyards scientists have discovered, not created by “local floods” but by the world wide flood that was brought upon the world by God
in Noah’s day!
Slide158Dinosaurs
We may not have all the answers but we do know that dinosaurs did exist and were created by God on the sixth day of creation, the same
day that man was created.
We know that man and dinosaurs lived side by side not millions of years apart as stated by evolutionist.
We know that dinosaurs were on the Ark with Noah along with all the other air-breathing animals that lived on earth at the time.
Slide159Dinosaurs
We know that the world after the flood was completely different than the world before
the flood.
This may have caused problems for dinosaurs especially those that were cold blooded since the climate after the flood was colder.
The large dinosaurs required large amounts of vegetation to keep them feed and the climate after the flood was not tropical like it was before the flood which may have also hindered their survival.
Slide1601948
2123
Slide161Dinosaurs
Not only did the dinosaurs have to overcome the new environment in which they lived but they could have also been wiped out over time as man began to spread around the world and
the dinosaurs became a threat.
What a great and beautiful world God has created for us to live in. May we give Him
the praise and honor He so rightly deserves!
For we know and gladly proclaim…
