Music was important to ancient cultures too!

The history of music dates as far back as humankind.

In ancient times, music would not have been played for pleasure. There was always a purpose for music.

The first musical instruments were probably for communicating or signaling.

As civilizations evolved, so did the role of music in society.

Music became an important part of work, dance, or rituals of ceremony and religion.

Each culture developed its own unique style.Slide4

Ancient Egypt

Music played a part in almost every aspect of life.

Musicians, many of whom were women, were revered in Egyptian culture. They were second only to royalty!

The

lute, lyre,

and

harp

Music of Ancient China can easily be traced back 4000 years.

Much of it was played using the

pentatonic scale.
