STOP STAMMERING

ACCEPTSlide2

WHAT IS STAMMERING?

Caused by a rare

neuro

-physiological disorder of the speech nerves in the brain.

Diverse and Variable : repetition of words, blocks, recurrence of sentences, etc.

It is important to understand its 'involuntary' and 'variable' nature. It may not be present while singing, whispering, reading with others, talking to pets, friends and under a variety of other conditions.

On the other hand, it may strike under quite common situations like

saying our name, talking over the phone, speaking while being observed, etc.

Social stigma plays a major role in its evolution.

While speech therapy is a possibility, social education, focusing on teachers, employers, health care providers, parents and family members appears to be the key.

Self help groups help a lot. Slide3

MYTHS ABOUT STAMMERING

Stammering is just a bad or funny habit.

People who stammer can't think clearly.

People who stammer think too fast for their tongues.

People who stammer are not intelligent.

PWS are found in every socio-economic group, culture and region.

It is more common among men than women by 4 to 1.

About half of PWS may have a close relative with the same disorder : Genetics!

PWS are more empathetic and are more inclined towards humanity

They are more focused and hard working, and succeed in career.

Hritik Roshan, Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts, Elvis Presley, Tiger Woods, Winston Churchill, King George VI, Lewis Caroll, Aristotle, Charles Darwin and the list goes on and on....

REALITY BEHIND STAMMERINGSlide4

TISA : THE INDIAN STAMMERING ASSOCIATION

The Indian Stammering Association is an association of Indian people who stammer (IPWS).

Its purpose is to collect and disseminate relevant, correct and unbiased information for people who stammer and their families, friends and society in general. It is promoting a self help group movement, where PWS learn to help each other and themselves in the ancient Indian spirit: “This Self is to be achieved through self effort!”

Our intention is to reflect the diversity of this land and represent the Indian slant on the issues, opinions and perspectives related to stammering.

TISA CORE VALUE: ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance in the case of a stutterer, has often been mis-understood. It is the first step towards change.

It does not mean accepting the problem and staying put. It also does not mean denying the problem we face or trivializing it. We reproduce here -with some minor changes, a very balanced understanding of what acceptance would mean in our case, from Tom

Weidig

:

1. I have a

neuro

-biological abnormality affecting my speech systems leading to a propensity to stutter.

2. I  have to live with my abnormality for the rest of my life. (as far as we know today).

3. I have to work on myself if I want to improve my communication.

4. I have to work on myself if I want to minimize the psychological and social consequences of stuttering.4. Shame, negative beliefs and most fears I held or experienced were completely unnecessary and harmful.5. Stuttering had some positive effect in that I was forced to take a deeper look at myself.6. Moderate to severe stuttering can be a burden to others who listen to me that I should minimize.7. Some jobs that strongly focus on fluent verbal expression are not for moderate or severe stutterers.Slide6

TISA SELF HELP GROUPS (SHG)

Meet other people who stammer (PWS) & know that you are not alone.

Learn to use therapies and techniques and practice them.

Possibility of talks from professionals.

All these things will build your own self image, and start to deal with emotional baggage many PWS have.
