Focus Questions
Why is racial identity important, and to what extent does it influence relationships among groups and the lives of individuals living in the United States?
The motto of the United States is
E Pluribus Unum
, one out of many—a reference to national unity. What is the relationship between national unity and ethnic and cultural diversity? Why is it that Euro-Americans are often excluded from discussions of culturally diverse populations within the United States?

Why Re-think Teaching Practices?
The present condition of education in the United States is cause for concern:
The general underperformance of students in public schools
Demographic shifts in the nation’s population have increased concern
for the escalating percentages of traditionally
underserved students
The inability of the education system
to meet the demands for particular STEM related
professions.
Many excellent teachers are prepared every year, but
too many
teachers are unable to foster high outcomes for students from low-income, diverse, and underserved groups. The community impact is great.
There is great variability
in the quality of experiences
for
learning teaching
within
and across teacher preparation programs.
