Volunteers are needed to prepare taco meat, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, tortilla chips, fruit and dessert. After this past Sunday’s service, several faithful folks told me of places (other than table) where signicant connections take/took place for them. I think the best contribution was this, “in the car.” The person was talking about how her teenagers were stuck with her in the car, and how it was unnecessary for them to make eye contact during a conversation. Her story resonated with me. It’s caused me to think about how challenging it can be to speak the truth at our tables. We don’t want to be seen as oensive, rude, misunderstood, or surprised at our tables. Consider how communion tables in most Disciple sanctuaries are at the front of the chancel, and how the congregation sits row after row staring at the back of each other’s heads. A Methodist colleague in Oklahoma City invited me to visit his church. It was a large congregation on the west edge of the city, named Church of the Servant (after Church of the Savior in D.C.) The premise on which the congregation was founded was that all members of the body of the Christ bring special/particular gifts to the community. And for the community to be whole, every - one had to be engaged in the faith community. So I visited a worship service of Church of the Servant. The sanctuary was built in the round and tiered so that all worshipers could see each other. The oor in the center of the room was open. And right in the center of the sanctuary was a simple communion table with a rough-hewn cross suspended above it. If I recall correct - ly, someone in the congregation had built the table. Sometimes we need to come to Christ’s Table with eyes wide open , looking into the face of sisters and broth - ers, adding those who are new and unknown to us with visible signs of the Christ’s inviting peace. At rst, it may feel strange and dicult, like a conversation in the car with your teenager. But given time, it begins to feel like the very presence of our living God.
