Differences
Paragraph 3-4
Each of these paragraphs should have 2 character traits that you explain and describe.
Each paragraph should have 1 or 2 quotes that you introduce and explain
DO NOT end the paragraph with a quote. Slide7
Ponyboy is a unique character. Even though he comes from the wrong side of the tracks he is very
intelligent
. An example of this is when he says, “I’m supposed to be smart because I make good grades and have a high IQ and everything” (Hinton 4). He even skipped a grade and takes all advanced classes. His older brother Darry thinks he can get a college scholarship because his grades are so good.
Pony is also
sensitive.
He shows his sensitive side when he talked to Cherry. He cares about things like sunsets, movies, books and poetry. When he watches a movies he gets really invested in the characters and their lives. He tries to put himself in their shoes. Most of the other greasers aren’t sensitive like Pony, and it’s one of the traits that makes him such a unique character. Slide8
How to Incorporate a Quote:
DO
NOT
drop a quote into your paper
You must
INCORPORATE
a quote into your paper so that the reader does not confuse the author’s thoughts with yours. It also helps the reader understand the purpose of the quote
It is helpful to use the author’s name and perhaps title of the text in your incorporationSlide9

How to Cite In Text
After a quote you
must
provide a citation.
If you use the author’s name in the incorporation it is only necessary for you to put page number at the end.
Ex: “In
The Outsiders, Hinton writes, …” (#).If there is no mention of the author, and it is the first time you are citing that author, write authors last name then page number.Ex: “This was shown when
Darry
…” (Hinton #).
If the quote/citation directly before is the same author then you may only put page numbers as well.
Ex: “This was shown when Dally…” (#).Slide11
Misc.
The punctuation ALWAYS goes after the citation.
Correct: “Hinton writes … (#).
Incorrect: “Hinton writes … . (#)
If the quote ends with a ? or an ! you put that after the citation.
Example: “
Darry asked … (#)?Titles of books must be Italicized Slide12
To Cite or Not to Cite?
Direct Quotations – WORD FOR WORD from the text.
Cite WITH page numbers
Paraphrase – Rewording an event into your own words
Cite WITH page numbers
Summary – Summarizing the entire book
Mention in the incorporation the title and author.Slide13
Conclusion:
- Touch on the 2 characters you compared.
Make a comment
on where
their friendship stands at the end of the
novel
Throughout their lives Ponyboy and Johnny were always good friends. They may have had different personalities, but they were still loyal to one another to the end. Even though Johnny is no longer alive, Ponyboy will always remember him. Slide14

Remove any “I”s in the
paper; unless they are in quotes.
