When does Protest Cross the Line? What sort of protest is acceptable? Are the protests at Dover acceptable? Project: Immigration and protest - a case study of Dover in 2016. School: The Towers School and Sixth Form Centre, Kent. Date: September 2016

Key Terms Thinking back to the last lesson, use your worksheet to match the correct key term with the correct definition.

Political Understanding In some of the research you do for your documentary you may find some political terms being used. It is important to understand these.Political groups can be thought about as sitting on a line moving from one side to the other Far Right Far left Centre

Political Groups Far Right Centre Far Left For fascists human society is similar to the animal world, brought about by democratic means the strong naturally dominate the weak and different species do not mix. So certain nations/races are naturally superior to others and should live separately. Force is needed to bring this about, usually organised and led by a ‘charismatic’ dictator Liberalism: Liberals believe that what is most important is people’s freedom or ‘liberty’, not only equality. Government is needed to protect freedom but must not be too powerful. Communism: Communists believe t hat there should be no rich and poor. They think that businesses should be owned by the people. Power should be taken from the rich by force

Far Right In your research you will hear or read about Far Right groups. These are not the same as the political right. They often do hold views about immigration and race. People will refer to them as fascist

Anti Fascist These are groups who try to stop the Fascist groupsThey are sometimes called the anti – fasch They believe people are equal. Some anti fascists believe even the government and Police are oppressing people

When do your beliefs become extreme? “Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. Also calls for the death of members of our armed forces whether in this country or overseas.” Could protestors in Dover be extremists?

True or False Look at the statements below. Decide which are true and which are false. True of False? You can spot someone with extreme beliefs purely by looking at them. Extremism always leads to violence. Extremism can apply to issues such as nuclear weapons, rights for fathers and animal testing. Extremism exists all over the world Some extremist groups believe that they are following God’s instructions. Extremist groups sometimes target young people.
