North Africa Campaign
Most of Western Europe was under the control of Axis powers.
Axis wanted to deprive Allies access to Middle Eastern oil and the Suez Canal.
This secured their access to oil & prevented the British from their resources in Asia & Africa.Slide3
Egypt is Invaded
Italy invades Egypt Sep. 13th, 1940 from bases in Libya.
Britain invades Egypt Dec. 9th, 1940 after its forces are built and continue West.
Axis powers are all over Egypt except Tobruk (Britain) which can’t be taken over.Slide4
Rommel Making His Way…
With the Italian Army defeated, Hitler sends Rommel to North Africa to clear out the Allied troops.
Allies are attacked in Libya & are pushed back… leaving only Tubruk standing against the Axis
Churchill sent in General Claude Auchinleck to attack Rommel in order to help Tobruk, which was a success & Rommel retreated Slide5
Allies & Axis Powers
The British try to trap the Axis, but are blocked by a counter-attack
The British & German continue to counter-attack
Axis forces arrive in January & help Rommel prepare for MORE counter-attacksSlide6
Battle of El Alamein
Rommel returns & begins an attack that faltered from lack of supplies
The Allied 8th army attacks Axis powers, driving them North at the same time that Allied forces attack the West, thus putting the Axis in a tight space.
Rommel insisted on evacuating, but Hitler forbade it & removed him from North AfricaSlide7
Winners
Rommel smashes American corps and is ordere to go north but stopped by Allies.
Rommel wished to retreat North Africa but Hitler refused and replaced Rommel with Jurgen von Arnim.
Allies win on May 3rd with 275,000 Axis prisoners.Slide8
Analysis
Axis and Allies battled over land and control over oil fields in Suez Canal/ Middle East.
If Rommel was never replaced, the war could’ve gone longer…
Allies beating the Axis showed Hitler was not as unbeatable as he thought. Slide9
