Activity This SSOW relates to the storage of fuel and the filling of vehicles from these stores. 2. Persons at Risk Drivers Loaders Contractors 3. Hazards Contact with moving vehicle Inclement weather, ice, snow, rain, fog Darkness during winter months Other vehicles 4. Procedures a) Premise Requirements Radstock Road and Midland Road depots both have facilities for receiving diesel deliveries. Secure storage is provided. b) Equipment Requirements Approved storage facilities and fuel dispensing pumps must be maintained to ensure that electrical parts do not generate sparks/sources of ignition. The Transport Operations Controller appoints a specialist contractor to service and maintain the pumps and controls. The tank levels are monitored and pressure tested as necessary. An isolator switch capable of cutting off all electricity to the pumps and fuel dispensing area must be clearly marked and within the area adjacent to the fuel dispensing area A Fire extinguisher (dry powder) must be kept within the vicinity of the fuel pump area. There is a stock of oil absorbent granules provided for use on spilt fuel. c) Display of Notices No Smoking signs must be displayed at all storage areas Fuel pumps should be clearly marked with the type of fuel dispensed by the pump. 5. General Guidance The Traffic Management Plan for Midland Road Depot has been communicated to other services whose vehicles refuel at the depot. If any driver was observed to be acting unsafely he / she would be spoken to by the Collections Manager, Technical Officer or Supervisor and the relevant service manager informed. 6. Personal Protective Equipment Diesel can cause contact dermatitis therefore it is recommended that gloves are worn whilst refuelling. 6. Medical Requirements / Vaccinations Hands should be washed following contact with diesel. A first aid box will be kept on each vehicle.
