In a culture where it was expected and accepted, one lover would send a “thank-you-for-that-go-round” tanka. Then the other lover would promptly reply with a tanka of his/her own. . Speaker. The “voice” from whom the poem comes. Could be any voice, not just the poet. Similar to a narrator, but in poetry we call it a speaker.
