Slide4

Section 2: Tactics

In World War 1 fighting got bogged down in the trenches. To avoid this happening again the Germans use the

blitzkrieg

or “lightning war.” They hit fast and hard to achieve their goals. The Allies will soon copy this technique. Slide5

Section 2: Tactics

The Allies decide to defeat Hitler first, then turn around and take care of Japan. Slide6

Section 2: Tactics

The United States will practice “island hopping.” We will jump from island to island, slowly getting within striking distance of Japan. Slide7

Section 2: Tactics

The Japanese do not make things easy.

In their culture,

at that time,

they believed surrendering to be dishonorable. They would rather die. If it looked like they were losing a battle, they would all charge at once. This was absolutely terrifying for Allied soldiers.Slide8

Section 2: Tactics

The Japanese would use suicide pilots called

kamikaze

. They would intentionally crash their planes into our ships. Slide9

Section 3: Turning Points

After Germany invaded Poland, England and France finally declared war on Hitler.

For a while nothing happened. This was called the “Phoney War.”

Germany invaded Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

One day the Germans attacked France. (Then they invaded Yugoslavia and Greece). Slide10

Battle of France.

Germany quickly defeated France. It only took them seven weeks. The Germans installed a new puppet government called

Vichy France

. They collaborated with the Germans. Slide11

Slide12

Battle of Britain

England was alone against Germany. France was defeated, and the Soviet Union and United States had not joined the war yet.

The British used their air force to fight back against German’s bombers. Hitler backed off, preventing an invasion of Great Britain. Slide13

Operation Barbarossa

Hitler and Stalin had signed a “non-aggression pact” which stated they would not attack one another.

Hitler backstabbed Stalin and attacked the Soviet Union anyway, invading east into Russia. Slide14

Slide15

Battle of Stalingrad

Hitler quickly advanced into Russia but got stuck at Stalingrad. His forces were surrounded and destroyed. Germany would now be on defense for the rest of the war.

This was the bloodiest battle in history. Slide16

Pearl Harbor

Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing the United States into the war. Slide18

D-Day/Normandy Invasion

The Allies decided to open a new front in the west. They decided to attack the shores of France at Normandy. This would establish a foothold in Europe that the Allies could use to push east toward Germany. Slide19

Battle of Midway

Midway was the beginning of the end for the Japanese. We destroyed four of their aircraft carriers. For the rest of the war they would be on defense. Slide22

Section 4: War Crimes

Japanese American citizens were viewed suspiciously by the American government. They were put into internment camps so they could be closely watched. The point of these camps was not to kill them, and they were let go after the war, but life there was not pleasant. Slide23

Nanking Massacre

Marauding Japanese troops loot, pillage, and kill during the occupation of Nanking, China. Slide24

The Bataan Death March

After Pearl Harbor Japan attacked the Philippines. They captured many Filipino and American soldiers, forcing them to a prisoner camp on foot. Along the way the prisoners were beaten and killed. Japanese soldiers rarely treated their prisoners well.

Slide25

Slide26

The Holocaust

Hitler blamed German’s loss in World War 1 on the Jews. He also hated communists, gypsies, and people with disabilities. They were shot or rounded up and put into death camps where they were starved, worked to death, and gassed. Slide27

Atomic Bombs

The United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan when it was clear they would not surrender easily. Despite this bringing an end to the war approximately 250,000 Japanese civilians were killed. Slide30

Section 5: Outcomes

Italy - Mussolini overthrown and killed when he tried to escape to Switzerland

Germany - Two days later Hitler kills himself as Soviet soldiers are closing in on Berlin, Germany, in order to avoid the same fate as Mussolini

Japan - surrenders after the atomic bombingsSlide31

The United Nations

The United Nations an international organization created by the victors of World War 2: The United States, Great Britain, France, China, and the Soviet Union.

It is designed to prevent another catastrophic world war by bringing countries together as members in order to find solutions to problems. Slide32
